Data Science Initiative: Data Matters 2017

The Data Science Initiative is excited to announce registration is open for Data Matters 2017! Head over to http://datamatters.org/ for all course descriptions, instructor bios, registration, and logistic information.

Building on the success of last year's Data Matters event, NC State has again partnered with UNC Chapel Hill's the Odum Institute and Renci, and the National Consortium for Data Science to offer “Data Matters: Data Science Short Course Series” in Hunt Library from August 7-11, 2017.  Data Matters is a week-long series of one and two-day courses aimed at professionals in business, research, and government. If you are struggling to stay afloat in the data deluge, grappling with large, complex data, or simply want to sharpen your data science skills, Data Matters is for you! 

This series is structured in three blocks: August 7-8August 9, and August 10-11, with three courses offered concurrently in each block.  While you can choose only one course from each block, courses are offered independent of each other and there is no predetermined sequence. Some courses are offered twice based on demand. Please read the course descriptions for recommended skill and experience levels. Course offerings include:

DAY 1-2
August 7-810:00 am – 4:15 pm
- Data Curation: Managing Data throughout the Research Lifecycle
- Introduction to Data Science Using R 
- Introduction to Data Science Using R 
- Introduction to Effective Information Visualization
- Working with Messy Data

DAY 3
August 9, 10:00 am – 4:15 pm
- Introduction to Big Data and Machine Learning for Survey Researchers and Social Scientists
- Introduction to Geospatial Analytics
- Open(ing) Data: Considerations in Data Sharing and Reuse
- Programming in R 
- Programming in R 

DAY 4-5
August 10-1110:00 am – 4:15 pm
- Collecting, Classifying, and Analyzing Textual Data Using R
- Intermediate Programming in R
- Introduction to Data Mining and Machine Learning
- Introduction to Data Mining and Machine Learning
- Visualization for Data Science in R

For non-NCDS members, the fees for one and two day courses are $250 and $500, respectively.  We are again offering a discounted Academic rate of $275 for the entire week for faculty, staff, and students.
