Beware of Low-Value Grantwriting Workshops

Colleagues, today I received yet another email from an outfit called "The Grant Training Center," advertising a Two-Day Grant Writing Workshop at University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

This organization charges $495 for this workshop, but you can receive much of the same information by working with the CHASS Research Office, with College and University development officers, with your colleagues at NC State, and with your professional network. This event is not sponsored by UNC-G, and this organization is simply renting space at or near UNC-G.

Please let me know if you have questions about this or similar organizations. Some of these offers are legit, but they tend to be the exception, not the rule.

Colleagues, I'm sharing a note I received from Bonnie Aldridge, who sends periodic reminders about our subscription to Research Development and Grant Writing News. This is a remarkable resource, full of information about funding trends, funding opportunities, how to prepare winning proposals, and so on. I strongly recommend Reading current and recent issues of this newsletter to gain insight into sometimes obscure funding opportunities. The e-books are also very good resources. Please share this with your colleagues across the college.

The July 2014 issue of Research Development and Grant Writing News has been posted to: go.ncsu.edu/research-news.

The Research Development Office maintains an institutional-level subscription allowing us to distribute freely within NC State University.

Upcoming opportunities in the social sciences and humanities

Bonnie Aldridge shared this list, and the ACLS, in particular, is a good place for faculty to look for support--it's a prestigious award that reflects well on a scholar's abilities and ideas.

Let me or the research office staff know if you plan to pursue any of these listed opportunities, which follow the jump. Click on the title for more information, and note that deadlines are primarily in September.

Important Limited Submission Opportunities

Colleagues, Bonnie Aldridge has shared this list of upcoming limited submission programs. I have not edited this list, so there may well be some opportunities here that are not aimed at CHASS, but given the interdisciplinary nature of our work, you should know of these opportunities and share them with your colleagues.

Click on the program name link to learn more about the opportunity.  Click the mandatory/courtesy contact link to email the Limited Submission office to declare your interest. The entries in bold are more likely to be of greatest interest to CHASS researchers. Please let me know if you wish to submit an application, as there may be an internal review process for many of these programs.

The list follows the jump.
