Please note that there are some small changes to the SRA program this year. In particular, please note that awards will be made in mid-October, and must be spent by May 31, 2015. This will be a firm deadline for spending. Please let me or Missy know if you have any questions.

The CHASS Research Office is pleased to announce the call and guidelines for the CHASS Scholarship and Research Awards (SRAs). These awards are intended to assist faculty in their scholarly pursuits. Applications are due electronically (in Word or PDF format) to the CHASS Research Office by 9:00 PM, Monday, September 15, 2014. The SRA cover page and CV page must be included. Please email your complete application to chass-rsrch@ncsu.edu and copy to Tom Birkland (tabirkla@ncsu.edu). Do not hesitate to contact Tom or Missy Seate (mgseate@ncsu.edu) if you have any questions about this award. Awards will be announced in mid-October.

CHASS faculty may apply for an SRA that provides support for expenses related to research, scholarship, and scholarship on teaching and learning.  Allowable expenses include transportation, subsistence, materials and supplies, hourly graduate student support, copying, or other expenses related to collection of data or library source materials. SRA funds are not available for conference travel, for additional pay or release time for faculty, or expenditures not allowed on state-appropriated funds.

New for 2014-15: The SRA program is funded by two different sources. SRAs in the social sciences will be funded through college F&A funds, as has been the usual practice. Starting in 2014-15, we will fund proposals from humanists through the revenue derived from an endowment fund created from a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) challenge grant. With this in mind, we will be able to fund no more than four social science and four humanities proposals for 2014-15.  Management of the awards will be the responsibility of the department.

A tangible scholarly product is expected from funded projects. Projects that will lead to external funding (grants, fellowships, and the like) will receive the highest funding priority.

Projects can begin immediately upon our notification of funding. Spending on projects must be completed by May 31, 2015. Funds not expended by this date will be returned to the Research Office to support SRAs in the following year. This deadline is firm, and no extensions will be allowed. We discourage faculty from proposing travel or summer support because such spending would occur after the spending deadline. Faculty seeking support for summer research activities are encouraged to apply externally or for the Faculty Professional Development Program (FRPD) for projects beginning on July 1, 2015. That call for proposals will be issued in Spring 2015.

Eligibility Requirements
Tenured and tenure-track faculty are eligible to apply; their proposals need only be signed by their department head. NTT faculty members may apply. To do so, they must supply a letter of support from their department heads, explaining how the project will benefit the researcher, the department, and the college. No faculty member may receive consecutive SRAs.

Review Criteria
Scholarship and Research Awards will be evaluated and ranked by the CHASS Research Committee according to relative merit. Merit will be determined by assessing:
·       The scholarly significance of the project. This should be explained in the proposal in terms of the importance of the project in the discipline.
·       The extent to which the project will be recognized in the scholarly community, such as through publications, grants, contracts, awards, memberships, distinctions, and the like.
·       The likelihood that the proposed project will lead to applications for external funding. Proposals should, where appropriate in the applicants discipline, include a short description of potential funders beyond general references to, for example, NEH or NSF. Better proposals will target a specific funding program. A separate statement of potential funders is a new requirement for this fiscal year. The CHASS research committee will no longer infer the likelihood of external funding. The investigator will make this explicit. Please note that this is not the sole criterion for support, but it is an important criterion that will be considered in reviews.
·       How well the project is conceived, defined, articulated, and organized.
·       The feasibility of the project, including the ability of the applicant(s) to complete the proposed project.
·       Results of the investigator’s prior research efforts supported by CHASS.
·       The likely outlets for publication of the work supported by the award.

Award/Reporting Requirements
·       No award will be made unless applicants have a complete CHASS faculty profile. Instructions on how to do this are at  http://chassresearch.blogspot.com/p/how-to-update-your- faculty-profile.html
·       Activity will be reported using the CHASS reporting system by June 30, 2015. Please find the CHASS Policy on Results Reporting here: http://www.chass.ncsu.edu/research/documents/CHASSPolicyonResultsReporting.pdf and the link to the reporting system by visiting http://chassresearch.blogspot.com/ and clicking on “CHASS Research Support Results Reporting Form” on the left-side menu bar.
·       Faculty who have received college support in the past, but have not completed reporting on those project outcomes, will not be funded. If you apply, and we do not have a report on the outcomes of previous college support on file, we will inform you and you will have five business days to submit the report. If no report is submitted, your application will not be considered.
·       It is expected that the SRA will lead directly to a scholarly or research outcome (e.g., publication or grant proposal).
·       Recipients are encouraged to present a summary of their project activity to an appropriate audience during the funding period. Examples of appropriate venues would include, but are not limited to, department or college seminars, public school outreach, or other community outreach. Award recipients are expected to keep the college informed of such outcomes and contributions.

Application Format (REQUIRED DOCUMENTS)
·       CHASS SRA Cover Page signed by department head of each investigator (Please scan the signed cover page and forward with other documents)
·       Abbreviated Vitae Page for each investigator
·       Proposal narrative no more than 1000 words.
·       New Requirement: A one-page description of potential external funders of your ongoing research
·       Budget Page with Explanation of Expenses (e.g., technical support, research expenses, materials and supplies, travel and associated costs, other).

Electronic submission to the Research Office is required in either Word or PDF format. Email to   chass-rsrch@ncsu.edu and copy to tabirkla@ncsu.edu no later than 9 PM, Monday, September 15, 2014.
