Call for Proposals from PhD Students: SAS-CHASS Graduate Industrial Traineeship

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
SAS-CHASS Graduate Industrial Traineeship
Deadline: May 16, 2016.

During the 2012-2013 academic year, the Publications unit at SAS partnered with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at NC State to support a Graduate Industrial Traineeship (GIT). This research appointment has proven positive, and SAS has agreed to continue this program for the 2016-17 Academic Year. The deadline for proposals is May 16, 2016.

A GIT is a paid research appointment that one would hold instead of teaching, but would then carry the benefits of the Graduate Student Support Plan (i.e., tuition remission, health insurance) but with a higher stipend and guaranteed summer employment.

We are now soliciting proposals among students in any Humanities and Social Sciences doctoral program for the 2016-17 academic year; that is, from August 2016 to August 2017.

The areas for research are open, but some topics to consider include: Accessibility, Usability, Education, Social Media, Learning Styles, Communicating Analytic Data, Data Visualization, and Multimedia Design. An overview of SAS’s business interests is attached to the announcement sent to your department heads.

Successful proposals will define an area of research, propose meaningful research questions, and lay out a method for answering those questions. Proposers will also discuss why the results of their research could be of interest to SAS, and why the research would further the student’s own progress in their scholarly program.

To apply, provide a brief research proposal, of about 3-5 pages, to Tom Birkland, Associate Dean for Research and Engagement, at tabirkla@ncsu.edu. Include with the application a cover letter of support from your doctoral advisor.

Proposals will be reviewed by the Associate Deans for Academic Affairs and Research and Engagement and by the CHASS Directors of Graduate Programs. The top rated proposals will be shared with SAS staff for future development and for selection of the successful candidates.

Please direct questions to Tom Birkland at tabirkla@ncsu.edu or 919-513-1834.
