Opportunities for Faculty (and Students) to Participate in Campus Compact Activities

NC State is a founding member of North Carolina Campus Compact, a collaborative network of 37 NC colleges and universities with a shared commitment to educating engaged citizens and strengthening communities. Guided by an Executive Board of presidents and chancellors, the Compact provides information, resources, recognition, and professional development opportunities to help faculty, staff, and students build the “engaged campus,” where student learning is connected to community life. Founded in 2002 and hosted by Elon University, the Compact is one of 34 state and regional affiliates of the national Campus Compact network. North Carolina Campus Compact builds the capacity of colleges and universities to produce civically-engaged graduates and strengthen communities.

Faculty Opportunities:
NC Campus Compact connects faculty and staff across the state and provides information, resources, recognition, and professional development services to member schools. The Office of Outreach and Engagement is assisting with this portion of NC State’s membership. Specific opportunities available this year include:

Meetings:
  • Pathways to Achieving Civic Engagement Conference (PACE)
February 14, 2018 at Elon University
  • Civic Engagement Institute
February 13, 2018 at Elon University
  • Civic Engagement Administrator Conference (CEAC)
June 2018

Awards and Publications:
  • Robert L. Sigmon Service-Learning Award
Recognizes one faculty member who has made significant contributions toward furthering the practice of service-learning.
  • Civic Engagement Professional of the Year Award
Recognizes a staff person at a member campus who has worked towards the institutionalization of service, fostered a vision of service on their campus, supported faculty and students, and formed innovative campus-community partnerships.

Partnerships recognizes that successful engaged learning depends on effective partnerships between students, faculty, community agencies, administrators, disciplines, and more. The articles in this peer-reviewed journal focus on how theories and practices can inform and improve such partnerships, connections, and collaborations. Studies co-authored by faculty, students, and/or community partners; or examining practices across disciplines or campuses; or exploring international networks, are all encouraged.

Funding:
  • Engaged Faculty Scholars: NC Campus Compact selects faculty interested in public scholarship, engagement and service-learning to serve a one year term with a $1500 stipend. The program supports the integration of service-learning and community engagement in teaching, research, and service. The application window opens in early March and closes in May.

Student Opportunities:
North Carolina Campus Compact provides several opportunities for civically-engaged students to learn, network, and receive recognition for their efforts. CSLEPS is leading this portion of NC State’s participation.

Meetings:
  • The CSNAP (Citizenship, Service, Networking and Partnerships) annual conference brings students together from across the region, to network, share, and learn about best practices and unique innovative ideas in civic engagement. This year’s conference is November 17-18th at Winston-Salem State University.

Awards:
  • The Community Impact Student Award is given to one undergraduate student from each member campus during CSNAP. This award recognizes passionate student leaders who find innovative ways to deepen and grow service on their campus  and in communities.
  • The John H. Barnhill Civic Trailblazer Award is awarded annually to an undergraduate student, in their final year of school, from a member campus who, like Mr. Barnhill, demonstrates innovation in civic engagement, creating foundations that expand partnerships amongst communities, campuses, and individuals.
