USDA: NIFA National Food and Agricultural Sciences Teaching Extension and Research Awards TERA
The purpose of TERA award is to recognize and promote excellence in teaching in the food and agricultural sciences within U.S. colleges and universities. For the purposes of this RFA, teaching is defined to include all aspects of developing human capital in order to help meet current and future national food, agricultural, natural resources, and human sciences (FANH) workplace needs. Examples of relevant activities under this project type include (but are not limited to) the following: formal classroom instruction; laboratory instruction; and practicum experience such as faculty development, student recruitment and services, curriculum development, and innovative teaching methodologies. It also includes activities that directly or indirectly contribute to student learning such as research, extension/outreach, and organizational arrangements needed for the proper functioning of the educational institution.
Internal deadline -  Notification of interest: 4/25/19
Limit - 1 per institution
Sponsor deadline - Application: 6/14/19

USDA: Agriculture and Food Research Initiative - Education and Workforce Development
The AFRI Education and Workforce Development (EWD) focuses on developing the next generation of research, education, and extension professionals in the food and agricultural sciences. In FY 2019, EWD invites applications in five areas: professional development for agricultural literacy; training of undergraduate students in research and extension (REEU); fellowships for predoctoral candidates; fellowships for postdoctoral scholars, and a brand new program for agricultural workforce training. Three of those programs are institutionally limited: Professional Development for Agricultural Literacy, REEU, and Workforce Training.
Limit - For each program, three applications may be submitted, only one award per lead institution

NIH: Data Science Research: Personal Health Libraries for Consumers and Patients (R01)
The National Library of Medicine seeks applications for novel informatics and data science approaches that can help individuals gather, manage and use data and information about their personal health. A goal of this program is to advance research and application by patients and the research community through broadly sharing the results via publication, and through open source mechanisms for data or resource sharing.
Internal deadline -  Notification of interest: 5/2/19
Limit - 1 per institution
Sponsor deadline - LOI: 6/28/19; Application: 7/31/19

Non-Limited Funding Opportunities
USDA: NIFA Veterinary Services Grant Program
The VSGP is designed to support education and extension activities and practice enhancement initiatives that will enable veterinarians, veterinary students, veterinary technicians, and veterinary technician students to gain specialized skills and provide practices with additional resources (e.g., equipment, personnel) needed to more effectively mitigate veterinary service shortages in the U.S. Ultimately, this program will bolster the capacity of private practitioners to provide food animal veterinary services in designated rural veterinarian shortage situations. The purpose of VSGP is to develop, implement, and sustain veterinary services and relieve veterinarian shortage situations in the U.S., which includes insular areas
Deadline - 5/29/19

NIH: Technology Development Program
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health released a pair of related funding opportunities for technology development. The goal of the program is to develop novel technologies (instruments, methods, synthetic approaches, biological products, etc.) that can address biomedical research questions. Note that this program is specifically for tools for biomedical research, rather than direct medical devices. While the proposals may highlight a specific question or use case, the technology should have broader application to assist a larger community of researchers. The two current announcements are:
  • Exploratory Research for Technology Development (R21): The goal of this announcement is to support proof of concept studies for feasibility and exploratory development of novel technologies. Projects are limited to 2 years and $275,000 direct costs over the two-year period. R21 deadlines: 2/16, 6/16, 10/16, through May 2022
  • Focused Technology Research and Development (R01): Technologies that have already demonstrated a proof of concept but need to overcome significant technical challenges/develop a fully functioning prototype, are appropriate for this announcement. Projects do not have a budgetary limit, but are limited to 4 years (5 years for early stage investigators).  R01 deadlines: 2/5, 6/5, 10/5, through May 2022

NIH: Environmental Influences on Aging: Effects of Extreme Weather and Disaster Events
The National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institute on Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research (OBSSR), National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), and National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) are collaborating on a program to study how the environmental conditions found in extreme weather and disaster events impact aging.  The ultimate goal is to improve the health and well-being of older adults via increased knowledge about extreme weather and disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. Studies looking at direct impacts of weather (e.g. surviving lightning strikes) are not responsive, but studies that look at environmental exposures caused by weather (e.g. water contamination from hurricane flooding) are responsive. There are two related funding opportunity announcements. Deadlines: 7/8/19, 11/4/19, 3/9/20, 7/7/20, 11/9/20, 3/8/21

The National Cancer Institute and National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences are supporting research on adducts to cellular macromolecules as indicators of exposures to endogenous and exogenous cancer risk factors relevant to exposures in human populations. There are no budgetary restrictions, but projects are limited to 5 years. This program has a companion funding opportunity (PAR-19-252) for a two-year R21 for more exploratory/developmental studies.
Deadline - 7/2/19, 11/6/19, 7/2/20, 11/6/20, 7/8/21, 11/8/21

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation: Pioneering Ideas Brief Proposal
The goal of this funding opportunity is to explore; to look into the future and put health first; to wade into uncharted territory in order to better understand what new trends, opportunities and breakthrough ideas can enable everyone in America to live the healthiest life possible. This program reaches beyond incremental changes to explore the ideas and trends that will influence the trajectory and future of health. Ultimately, the foundation supports work that will help discover what a Culture of Health can look like—and how we can get there.
Deadline - 10/15/19 (Applications reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the year)
