Equity-Focused Policy Research: Building Cross-Cutting Evidence on Supports for Families with Young Children

The COVID-19 pandemic has made clear that current policies and practices fall short in supporting and facilitating families’ access to the social safety net system. Moreover, the pandemic has exacerbated the consequences of poverty, racism, and discrimination and exposed the health, economic, social, and other inequities vulnerable families experience. In the context of the pandemic, RWJF is taking steps to focus attention on and provide resources to families and communities facing the greatest strain.  The Equity-Focused Policy Research (EFPR) grant program seeks to fund a body of research that illuminates strategies and policies that enhance families’ equitable access to key resources for supporting their children’s healthy development. EFPR grants are guided by a research agenda that focuses on: (1) understanding the sources of inequities in families’ access to and use of key resources; (2) identifying and testing innovations to advance equity; and (3) strategies for scaling up policies and approaches that are effective in advancing equity. The agenda addresses three policy areas as providing critical resources for families: (1) access to early care and education (ECE); (2) income supports (such as the Earned Income Tax Credit [EITC] and cash transfer programs) and income generation/replacement; and (3) nutrition supports (such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [SNAP]).

USDA: Rural Health and Safety Education (RHSE)

 Rural Health and Safety Education (RHSE)

NIFA requests applications for the Rural Health and Safety Education (RHSE) Competitive Grant Program for Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 to address the needs of rural Americans by providing individual and family health education programs. The anticipated amount for awards in FY 2021 is approximately $4,000,000; approximately $1,000,000 of which will be for competitive external grants for eligible institutions to support the utilization of telehealth, telemedicine, and distance learning strategies for education and training in minority rural communities related to opioids or preventing spread of SARS-CoV-2 and in mitigating infection and transmission of SARS-CoV-2.

Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Aging-Relevant Behavioral and Social Research on Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

The National Institute of Aging is issuing this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) to highlight the continuing need for behavioral, psychological, social, and economic research on SARS-CoV-2 and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). There is a need for ongoing research on the longer-term effects of COVID-19 on the health and well-being of those infected, those caring for the sick, and many others whose lives were disrupted by the pandemic and its associated mitigation and prevention strategies. Beyond effects on individuals, this pandemic has brought about unprecedented social and economic disruption that is expected to have long-term and profound effects on the health of the population, particularly COVID-19 vulnerable groups including older adults. Interested PIs can apply through the Parent R01, R21, and R03 opportunities, as well as several NIA-specific funding opportunity announcements.

While research related to the direct clinical effects of COVID-19 are supported by other funding opportunities, the purpose of this funding opportunity is to focus on the role and impact of digital health interventions [e.g., mobile health (mhealth), telemedicine and telehealth, health information technology (IT), and wearable devices] to address access, reach, delivery, effectiveness, scalability and sustainability of health assessments and interventions for secondary effects (e.g., behavioral health or self-management of chronic conditions) that are utilized during and following the pandemic, particularly in populations who experience health disparities and vulnerable populations

Before 2020-21, our college had never had a faculty member win an NSF CAREER award. Now, we have two awardees this year! We very strongly encourage you to look into this if you are a junior faculty member, or to share this with any junior colleague who may find this interesting. NSF’s prestigious Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program offers support for early-career faculty seeking to build strong foundations for research and education in their respective fields. Faculty interested in submitting a CAREER proposal are invited to attend a workshop covering key aspects of proposal development. The workshop, hosted by the Proposal Development Unit (PDU) in the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI), College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), and College of Sciences (COS), will be held virtually from 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday March 24, 2021.

National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship Program (and Webinar about the program)

 The National Endowment for the Humanities is now accepting applications for the 2021 Fellowships program. 

On February 9, from 12:30-3 pm EST, we will be offering a live webinar for administrators and prospective applicants to introduce the program, describe the application process, and offer application writing suggestions. There will be a chance to ask questions and captions will be available. The webinar will be recorded so that others can watch it later. Please feel free to share this information with your faculty.

Advancing Health Literacy to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to COVID-19

The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) anticipates funding for an initiative to demonstrate the effectiveness of local “grassroots” efforts to improve the access, use and outcomes of vaccination, testing, contact tracing and health behaviors related to COVID-19 among racial and ethnic minority populations, including those in rural communities. OMH expects projects funded through this initiative to: 1) use evidence-based, culturally and linguistically appropriate health literacy strategies to increase health literacy for COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, vaccination and/or other mitigation measures (e.g., public health prevention practices); and 2) document participation in COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, vaccination and/or other mitigation measures (e.g., public health prevention practices). This program will align with, but not duplicate, existing federal efforts to disseminate resources for COVID-19 responses.  

National Endowment for the Arts: Creative Writing Fellowships

The National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowships program offers $25,000 grants in prose (fiction and creative nonfiction) and poetry to published creative writers that enable recipients to set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement. Applications are reviewed through an anonymous process in which the criteria for review are the artistic excellence and artistic merit of the submitted manuscript. Through this program, the Arts Endowment seeks to sustain and nurture a diverse range of creative writers at various stages of their careers and to continue to expand the portfolio of American art.

NC State Impact Scholars

 The Strengthening The Impact of Research (STIR) program seeks to enhance NC State’s capacity to design and conduct research with broad impacts on society by creating and supporting the first cohort of NC State Impact Scholars.

This group of 10-12 selected Impact Scholars will attend a series of five, 90-minute workshops in Spring 2021 to strengthen their capacity to create innovative research impacts on society and write more competitive grant proposals. Impact Scholars will also design and implement a project of their own, and conduct a Research Impacts workshop in their department. With support from the Office of Outreach and Engagement, Impact Scholars will receive $1,000 to support their project expenses.

Upcoming Deadline for NC Sea Grant Coastal Research (January 11, 2021)

The deadline is approaching for the first step in North Carolina Sea Grant’s 2022-2024 proposal process for applied research to address problems affecting coastal ecosystems, economies, and communities. 

North Carolina Sea Grant uses a two-step process for its core funding. Initially, researchers submit preproposals that outline the research topic, its need within the state, the approach and strategy, and the team to be assembled. The second step, known as full proposals, will take place later this year. A preproposal is required before a full proposal can be submitted for the final competitive review.
