Data Science Short Courses--College Funding Available

Dear Colleagues,

As part of the Data Science Initiative at NC State, the Data Science Short Course Series is a set of short, intensive courses on Data Science, including an introduction to the subject, machine learning, the R software package, text mining, and others. My office will fund up to about ten faculty [update: and some PhD students] to take these courses.

The courses will be held on August 8-12 at Hunt Library.  The course fees are a reasonable $250 for the full week (three courses). The non-NCSU rate for the whole week can be well over $1000, so this is quite affordable. For more information, see the link at https://research.ncsu.edu/dsi/data-matters/

My office will fund up to about ten faculty [and PhD students] to take these courses. In limited cases, I will fund PhD students to attend these courses along with their faculty advisor, or upon a strong recommendation from their faculty advisor. Priority for funding will be given to faculty or students who would attend for the entire week (that is, take three courses), and who would agree to work with colleagues as a resource, sharing what they've learned with colleagues and students. Tenure-track faculty will be a higher priority than NTT, but all faculty may apply.

To apply for these funds, please email me at tabirkla@ncsu.edu. Simply indicate which courses you would like to take, and how these courses would benefit both your scholarship and serve as a resource for your colleagues.

On a personal note, I find these courses very exciting. Of particular interest to me is the course on how to use R, and on using R in text mining and analysis. This is just one example of where these courses will appeal to a range of scholars in the social sciences and the humanities who are working at the cutting edge of these techniques.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
