Data visualization workshops return to the NCSU Libraries
Hands-on classes throughout the spring cover everything from basic charts, graphs and infographics to visualizing statistical analysis and geospatial data
Data Viz classes
(Raleigh, NC) - The NCSU Libraries expands its Data Visualization Workshop Series this spring, offering free, hands-on workshops on tools and skills to meet the data visualization needs of students and faculty across the sciences and humanities.

Held in the D. H. Hill Library’s ITTC Lab 2 (unless otherwise indicated), the series emphasizes practical data literacy across all disciplines. Students will learn about the many visualization services available to them at the NCSU Libraries. All workshops are interactive and are open to NC State students, faculty and staff. All hardware, software and sample data sets will be provided.

R for Absolute Beginners
  • Friday, Jan. 13, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
  • Friday, March 3, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
R is a language and computing environment for statistical analysis and graphics that is free and open-source. No prior coding experience required.

Visualize Your Data with Tableau
  • Friday, Jan. 27, 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Tableau Public is a free tool for creating visualizations and dashboards. Participants will create charts, graphs and dashboards from provided datasets. No prior experience required.

Elements of Visualization Design
  • Friday, Feb. 31:30-3:00 p.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 24, 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Learn how to design attractive data visualizations for effective communication with tools such as Tableau.

Infographics: Visualizing Information
  • Wednesday, Feb. 82:00-3:30 p.m.
This workshop will cover basic design and narrative principles for creating infographics that balance visual appeal with data integrity. Participants will gain hands-on experience creating an infographic with free infographic creation tools.

Visualize Survey Results with Tableau
  • Friday, Feb. 10, 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Learn how to make charts and graphs from a sample data set to visualize survey data in Tableau. Data structuring, cleaning and visualizing steps will be covered.

R for Document Creation
  • Wednesday, Feb. 152:00-3:30 p.m.
  • Friday, March 31, 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
R Markdown is a text formatting tool that publishes code within documents, enabling reproducibility for researchers. Turn R scripts into PDFs, slideshows, HTML, scholarly articles, interactive dashboards and books.

Text Analysis and Visualization with Voyant Tools
  • Friday, Feb. 17, 10:45 a.m.-12:00 p.m. (at the James B. Hunt Jr. Library)
In this drop-in workshop, participants will gain hands-on experience analyzing textual data with Voyant Tools, a free web-based software. Workshop activities will be self-directed using provided data and step-by-step instructions. Experience is not required.

Tableau II
  • Friday, March 171:30-3:00 p.m.
This intermediate level workshop is the second workshop in our Tableau series. In this workshop, we will cover how to use calculated fields, filtering and story points in analyzing and presenting your data.

Mapping and Geospatial Visualization with QGIS
  • Friday, April 14, 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
QGIS is a free and open source software for analyzing and visualizing your geo data, with greater analytical capabilities than online mapping sites.
