Excellent opportunity for recent PhDs in the humanities: ACLS Public Fellows.

The American Council of Learned Societies has announced its newest program, ACLS Public Fellows.  The program invites recent Ph.D.s from the humanities and humanistic social sciences to apply for two-year staff positions at partnering organizations and the nonprofit sector.

Newberry Library: Newberry Long-Term Fellowship applications, Due December 12

The Newberry Library is accepting Newberrry Long-Term Fellowship applications until December 12.  Fellowship topics include American history, late medieval and early modern history and literature; American Indian studies; and humanities.  Stipends are $4,200 per month; applicants must specify how many months they plan to be in residence.

National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation Dissertation and Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs

Coming Soon: Brookdale Foundation Announcement, 2012 Leadership in Aging Fellowship

The Brookdale Foundation's announcement of its 2012 Leadership in Aging Fellowship program is expected soon.  The limit is one proposal per institution.  The fellowship provides two years of support to junior academics to focus on a project that will help establish them in an area of aging research. The Fellowship is open to a broad range of disciplines including, but not limited to, medical, biological and basic sciences, nursing, social sciences, the arts and humanities.

Award:  $250,000 over two years

Important dates:
Notification of interest in applying:  Due by 5 p.m. September 7 to carol_ashcraft@ncsu.edu .
Internal preproposal submission: Due by 5 p.m. September 29 to carol_ashcraft@ncsu.edu .
Estimated internal review completion date:  October 4
Brookdale Foundation application due date:  Anticipated to be November 1

The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has announced a call for applications to its Guggenheim Fellows program, "fellowships to assist research and artistic creation."   The fellowships support all endeavors except the performing arts, and include natural sciences, social sciences, the humanities and the creative arts. Fellowships are awarded to selected individuals for a minimum of six months and a maximum of 12 months.  The number of applications per institution is unlimited.

Important dates:
Application deadline: September 15
November 2011:  Guggenheim will contact your references for recommendations.
November 22, 2011:  Work sample submission deadline.
Mid-December:  Acknowledgment of receipt of your application.
April 2012:  Notification of competition results sent to all applicants by email.
April-June 2012:  Return of all work samples to applicants.

The amount of the grant varies according to the project; funds are provided to the individual, not the institution, and are unrestricted.

Congratulations to two CHASS faculty with recently announced research grant awards!

One reason I wanted to establish the CHASS research blog is to share good news about faculty who have successfully won grants, fellowships, and other resources and recognition for their outstanding research. I am pleased to be able to report two items of news:

• John Wall, in the Department of English, has won a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), on "New Methods of Documenting the Past: Recreating Public Preaching at Paul's Cross, London, in the Post-Reformation Period."
  
• David Gilmartin, in the Department of History, received a fellowship from Stanford Humanities Center for 2011-12 to complete a book exploring the history and meaning of voting in India over the last century.

More news and details will likely emerge from both of these fascinating projects in the coming months, and we will share it with you. Congratulations to John and David!
