NSF has a sustainability initiative, inviting collaboration across disciplines.  The PIRE program, which supports international collaboration, has a sustainability focus this year.  The opportunity demonstrates the commitment at NSF to problem-centered, cross-disciplinary work.http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=504707  The RCN could also be particularly helpful for those who have ongoing research projects people wish to coordinate.  Some of our more junior colleagues might find the Fellows program especially appropriate.

NSF Ltd. Submission: Sustainable Energy Pathways

The National Science Foundation has announced the Sustainable Energy Pathways program, which is limited to three lead proposals per institution.  The program is part of the NSF-wide initiative on Science, Engineering, and Education for Sustainability (SEES).  The topic areas are Energy Harvesting & Conversion from Renewable Resources; Sustainable Energy Storage Solutions; Critical Elements & Materials for Sustainable Energy; Nature-Inspired Processes for Sustainable Energy Solutions; Reducing Carbon Intensity from Energy Conversion & Use; Sustainable Energy Transmission & Distribution; Energy Efficiency & Management.

Award:  Up to $500,000 per year for up to 4 years.

Internal preproposal submission:  Due by 5 p.m. November 7 tocarol_ashcraft@ncsu.edu .
Estimated internal review completion:  November 14
NSF proposal deadline:  February 1, 2012
