April 10 deadline: NC Sea Grant Preproposals for 2016-18 Core Funding

North Carolina Sea Grant invites preproposals for coastal and marine research projects for the 2016-2018 core funding cycle. Completed preproposals are due April 10, 2015.

“Preproposals identify coastal research needs and describe the relevance of the research to North Carolina,” explains John Fear, deputy director. “We expect diverse proposals from researchers across the state, yet all focusing on topics that fit within our program’s strategic plan.”

Full proposals will be requested later this year only from investigators who have submitted preproposals. Maximum Sea Grant funding for the two-year funding period will be $100,000 per project. North Carolina Sea Grant requires nonfederal matching funds equal to at least 50 percent of the funding requested.

Proposals in a wide range of disciplines are encouraged, as are interdisciplinary and interinstitutional proposals that reflect the linkages within the state. Preproposals must emphasize, and fall under, one of the Focus Areas listed in the North Carolina Sea Grant Strategic Plan, which is included as a link in the application materials.

When preparing a preproposal, the principal investigator also must identify applications for — and measurable impacts of — the project’s results, and explain how those results will be shared with user groups. Prospective applicants are encouraged to discuss topics and potential users of the results with Sea Grant staff.

In the preproposal stage, researchers are not required to have approval through a campus administrative process. Completed preproposals must be entered electronically into the North Carolina Sea Grant eSG system by 5 p.m. on April 10, 2015.

NC State University Graduate Student Research Symposium--March 25!

The Tenth Annual NC State University Graduate Student Research Symposium will be held in the Jane S. McKimmon Center next Wednesday, March 25, 2015. The poster session will be from 1:30 to4:00.  This year, there will be over 200 poster presentations representing research being conducted in 64 graduate programs.

This event is co-sponsored and organized by the NC State University Graduate Student Association (UGSA) and the Graduate School. Additional information may be found at:

The primary goal of the symposium is to showcase the outstanding quality and diversity of graduate research at NC State. This is a great opportunity for all to take a look at the interesting research projects being conducted at the graduate level. 

Undergraduates who are interested applying to graduate school will certainly benefit from talking to our graduate students about their research, and perhaps getting ideas as to how to present their research at conferences in which they may participate in the future.

The Humanities and Social Sciences Graduate CV Bank and Job Announcements

Colleagues,

Earlier this year, at a meeting with the DGPs, I announced a new initiative in my office to improve the way we publicize research assistantship openings in the College. 

The reason for this initiative is straightforward: the College, like all colleges, is being asked to support more graduate students, and our faculty, who have become more successful at winning external grant funding, need to be able to recruit graduate students quickly after learning that their projects are funded. 

In many cases, a department's grad students may be entirely committed for a year, working on other projects. Or, in some cases, interdisciplinary work requires skills that don't exist in a researcher's own department, but that might be found among grad students in another department. Faculty often tell me that finding the talent for their research projects is difficult. I hope that this initiative makes finding such talent more efficient. 

The CV bank (simply, a folder with grad student CVs maintained in Google Drive) and a job posting listserv, are intended to bring together students look for research positions with faculty offering such positions. Any sort of position may be announced, ranging from occasional hourly work (of the sort funded by small internal grants like FRPDs or SRAs), to fully funded GSSP positions funded through external grants. I suspect that most positions will look like the former, as the latter type of positions will be filled by students that you and your colleagues are mentoring in your department, or in established interdisciplinary efforts.  

This is a first step, and a work in progress, and I welcome any ideas that would make this effort work better for your colleagues. Let me know how I can help in any way to improve upon this initiative to make it work for you.

The Digital Innovation Lab, the Howard W. Odum Institute for Research in Social Science, and the UNC Libraries cordially invite scholars (faculty, administrators, librarians and archivists, and graduate students) from the UNC community to explore potential research, teaching, and engaged scholarship applications of the North Carolina Historical Newspapers Digital Collection: 3.2 (and counting) million pages of pre-1923 newspapers from across the state, digitized and made available to the UNC community through a partnership between the UNC Libraries, the Digital Innovation Lab, and Newspapers.com.

The University Global Partnership Network (UGPN) is pleased to announce the Fourth Call for Proposals of the UGPN Research Collaboration Fund. This Fund supports high-quality research collaborations between researchers at the UGPN partner institutions. The intention is that these awards go beyond pump-priming to support substantive engagement that leads to high quality outputs, such as joint papers or joint research bids. Proposals should be jointly submitted by faculty from at least two of the UGPN partner institutions.

RFP: "Understanding the Relationships between SNAP, Food Security, and Health in the National Health Interview Survey"

The University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research (UKCPR), in cooperation with the Economic Research Service (ERS) and the Food Nutrition Service (FNS) in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will competitively award grants to qualified individuals and institutions to provide rigorous research that utilizes data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) or from NHIS linked to the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS).

We seek new research with the NHIS or NHIS-MEPS that expands our understanding of (1) the interaction between adult mental and physical health and household food insecurity, (2) SNAP on the health of both family caretaker and children, and (3) food insecurity on health and the possible mediating role of SNAP.

It is anticipated that 4 grants of up to $75,000 each will be awarded.

Scholarship of Community Engagement Institute (Applications due February 13th

We would like to remind you that there is one week left to apply to the Office of Faculty Development’s Scholarship of Community Engagement Institute. Based on our successful annual Summer Institute on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, the Community Engagement Institute will take place over three days during Spring Break 2015: Monday, March 9th, Wednesday, March 11th, and Friday, March 13th.

Participants will gain knowledge in the unique aspects of conducting research on community engagement as well as hear from experienced engagement researchers. They will begin work on their Scholarship of Community Engagement projects and receive feedback from their fellow participants as well as session leaders. Participants will attend four virtual check-in meetings in 2015-16 with the expectation that they will present their research at the 2016 Office of Faculty Development Teaching and Learning Symposium.

To apply for the Engagement Institute please fill out an application form at go.ncsu.edu/engagementinstitute. Applications will close at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13^th. This pilot Institute will be limited to ten participants. If you wish to participate, please be sure to hold9:00-5:00pm on your calendars each day of the Institute. University of Adelaide - NC State University Starter Grants for Research Collaboration

The strategic partnership between the University of Adelaide and North Carolina State University is a preferred relationship to leverage complementary strengths and trans-disciplinary scholarship to advance research collaboration as well as academic exchanges.  We are pleased to announce the call for joint proposals for the development of research collaboration.  These awards are designed to provide pump-priming and early contact partner outreach with the expectation that they will lead on to more substantive engagement resulting in high quality outputs, such as international research training for graduate students or early career faculty, publication of joint papers from collaborative research, or follow-on joint research bids.
Funding: Selected proposals will receive up to $10,000 from each institution with a maximum total of $20,000 (jointly funded).  Funds will support the travel and subsistence costs associated with researchers spending time at the partner institution.

The Washington Center for Equitable Growth: Funding for Research on Economic Inequality

Dear Colleague:

I’m writing to inform you about a funding opportunity for researchers and graduate students who are associated with U.S. universities. The Washington Center for Equitable Growth has funds available to support scholarly research on the various channels through which economic growth and stability is affected by economic inequality. They are considering proposals in the areas of household economics, human capital in a generational context, innovation and entrepreneurship, and governance of social and political institutions. Letters of inquiry are due by February 1, 2015.

The Request for Proposals explains the four areas of inquiry. Doctoral grants are available at the $15,000 level, while Academic Grants are typically in the range of $25,000 to $100,000.

Grants Awarded for 2014 [2]

The Washington Center for Equitable Growth awarded 15 grants in 2014. Topics touched on the issues of gender equality, early child development, school finance, the application of behavioral economics, and employment performance in international perspective. The grants went to scholars from multiple disciplines, such as sociology, public policy, economics, city and regional planning, law, and government.

These grants provide an excellent opportunity to become engaged in what many consider to be the paramount issue of our time: the huge expansion of economic inequality and its impact on the quality of life and the stability of the American economy and society. The executive director of the Washington Center is Heather Boushey [3], a distinguished economist who has written widely on employment, social policy and the well-being of families.

The CHASS Humanities Extension Program at NC State seeks to match public school classroom teachers with CHASS NCSU faculty who are interested in sharing their expertise in the Humanities field with public school students. Dr. David Zonderman from History serves as the program’s academic director. The goals of the program are to provide: 1) An opportunity for students to engage with and have a better understanding of the Humanities - what the disciplines are, what they do, how they engage with and give perspective on contemporary issues 2) Public engagement with and support of the Humanities at NC State 3) High school students with exposure to potential majors at NC State.

We have 67 teachers in NC interested in visits for Spring 2015. Grants: Congressional Research Grants (Not Just for Political Scientists!)

Grants: Congressional Research Grants

DEADLINE: All proposals must be received no later than March 1, 2015. (Note from Tom B. These proposals should be submitted directly to the Dirksen Center. This type of proposal is not submitted by or for NC State.)

The Dirksen Congressional Center invites applications for grants to fund research on congressional leadership and the U.S. Congress. The Center, named for the late Senate Minority Leader Everett M. Dirksen, is a private, nonpartisan, nonprofit research and educational organization devoted to the study of Congress. Since 1978, the Congressional Research Grants program has invested more than $944,208 to support over 436 projects. Applications are accepted at any time, but the deadline is March 1 for the annual selections, which are announced in April.

The Center has allocated $50,000 in 2015 for grants (an increase of $15,000 over 2014) with individual awards capped at $3,500. Stay tuned for news on the application and selection process.

This is a reminder that the Tenth Annual NC State University Graduate Student Research Symposium will be held in the McKimmon Center on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 from 1:00 pm - 5:30 pm. The goals of the Symposium are to showcase the outstanding quality and diversity of graduate-level research at NC State, in addition to providing students with the opportunity to practice their communication skills with those outside of their discipline.  Last year, there were over 200 poster presentations, representing 57 graduate programs from every college.

Request for Proposals: 2015-2016 Extension, Engagement, & Economic Development Seed Grant

The Office of Outreach & Engagement is pleased to announce that funds are available to be awarded for selected proposals related to extension, engagement, and economic development activities for the 2015-16 fiscal year. The maximum award will be $10,000 per proposal request. 2015-2016 Proposal Guidelines and the Proposal Application are attached for your convenience.

The number of awards granted will be contingent upon the total amount of available funds and the incremental amounts of each request. The timeline for the 2014-15 competition is as follows:
