National Humanities Center Fellowships
Following are two important notices from the NSF regarding funding programs in Sociology and in Accountable Institutions and Behavior (political science, for the most part). As always, if you are interested in applying to either of these programs, and haven't already done so, please contact the research office. Even if you don't plan to submit for the August deadlines, the programs also have deadlines in January 22 that you may wish to target.
On July 20, 2021 from 1:00-4:00 PM ET, NIH will be convening a symposium entitled “A Match Made in Science: Integrating Bioethics and Biomedical Research” to highlight the integral role that bioethics plays in advancing science and to discuss strategies for fostering collaboration between bioethicists and biomedical researchers. Participants will discuss concrete examples of how integrating bioethics into biomedical research has strengthened research outcomes and share practical advice for initiating and sustaining successful collaborations. Colleagues, due to an oversight on my part, the following announcement about the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Salary program for Summer 2022, which was distributed university-wide on May 25, was not flagged in the college research blog. The university will nominate two scholars, one of which may come from our college.

The Open Knowledge Center (OKC) invites proposals for short (1 semester) to longer (1-2 year) research collaborations for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years. Proposals are welcomed from any discipline or field, and from graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty at any rank. We are seeking projects that align with the values of the OKC, namely: openness, collaboration, critical engagement, evolution in research practices, curiosity, experimentation, and commitment to support under-resourced or traditionally marginalized scholars and areas of research.
Rip Apart a Data Management Plan

Our Town is the National Endowment for the Arts’ creative placemaking grants program. These grants support projects that integrate arts, culture, and design activities into efforts that strengthen communities by advancing local economic, physical, and/or social outcomes. Successful Our Town projects ultimately lay the groundwork for systems changes that sustain the integration of arts, culture, and design into local strategies for strengthening communities. These projects require a partnership between a nonprofit organization and a local government entity, with one of the partners being a cultural organization. Cost share/matching grants range from $25,000 to $150,000, with a minimum cost share/match equal to the grant amount.
The 2021 cycle of the Non-laboratory Scholarship/Research Support Program (NSRP) is now open. NSRP is designed to support scholarship/research needs in disciplines not driven by instrument-dependent and lab-based research. Such disciplines may include, but are not limited to, social sciences, humanities, education, design, management, and libraries. These fields require other types of resources or infrastructure such as database access, survey instruments and panels, measurement tools, and travel to field sites and archives. In an effort to strengthen infrastructure and the overall research and scholarship enterprise, priority will be given to proposals that support multiple NC State scholars and/or multiple projects at the university.

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) just announced two new funding opportunities to rapidly distribute American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act funding to cultural organizations and educational institutions adversely affected by the coronavirus pandemic. These funding opportunities will provide direct grants to individual humanities institutions and grantmaking organizations to distribute as competitive subawards to affected organizations and individuals. These two grant programs aim to help the humanities community recover from the economic burdens of the pandemic, enable the reopening of humanities institutions and programs, and support the retention of the humanities workforce.
The National Science Foundation, in conjunction with its counterparts from several countries in the Americas, Europe, and Africa have announced a major initiative on "recovery, renewal and resilience in a post-pandemic world.
The National Science Foundation's Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE) directorate has issued a Dear Colleague Letter describing a new framework for the explanation of broader impacts in proposals submitted to SBE programs. As the DCL notes, "This "broader impacts framework" in no way alters NSF's existing criteria ‒ rather, it offers guidance on how to consider and convey broader impacts in ways that are easier for others to understand." If you are planning to write a proposal for NSF, you will want to review this letter carefully. Other directorates have not adopted this framework, but have acknowledged that it may provide proposal writers with a good way of framing their broader impacts narratives in other proposals. Please review the letter carefully, and let the Research Office know if you have any questions.
