NSF requirements for Data Management Plans: Help and Support

Colleagues, I received this information from Matt Ronning, who has shared with us information about the preparation and submission of the Data Management Plan (DMP) as part of NSF proposals. The university has done outstanding work to support all researchers in complying with this requirement (which, in my opinion, is long overdue!).

Please let me and the CHASS Research Office staff know if we can help in any way with your DMPs and other proposal elements, and please avail yourself of these excellent resources.

Recently, I've been contacted a few times for guidance on preparation and submission of a Data Management Plan (DMP) pursuant to NSF's requirements.  Through this message, I'd like to update you on current guidance for DMP development that is available to our faculty as well as an important new resource:

(1) Since the inception of the NSF requirement, SPARCS has worked with the NC State Libraries who has developed a continually evolving repository of DMP guidance at:  http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/guides/datamanagement/

(2) Through the NC State Libraries, we've partnered with Data Management Planning Tool, aka DMPTool, (developed and maintained by the California Digital Library).  We are in good company as institutions like Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Yale, the UC system, Ohio State and Penn State also are partner institutions for the DMPTool.  It doesn't cost us a dime and the DMPTool will maintain all of the latest news and changes for each funding agency that requires a data management plan.

Basically, it provides a template for each funding agency (even the specific directorates within NSF) with instructions and guidance on how to write the data management plan.

This new resource is available through our current guide (link is above) or directly at:  https://dmp.cdlib.org/
