Subject: Invitation to inaugural 'Pints of Science' event, September 25th at 7pm

Dear colleagues:

I'd formally like to extend to you an invitation to the inaugural "Pints of Science" event at Tir Na Nog in downtown Raleigh on September 25th at 7pm. The speaker will be Dr. Rob Dunn from the Department of Biology, and he will be giving a brief talk entitled "Eight Ways Fungi are Taking Over Your Life: What No One is Telling You About Beer" followed by a Q&A session. The attached flyer has all the details, save one: Tuesday evening is 'pint night' at the pub, featuring discounted prices on draft beer.

"Pints of Science" is a collaborative venture between North Carolina State University and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, led and organized by IGERT fellow and NCSU graduate student Gabe Zilnik and myself. The goal of this outreach effort is twofold:  (1) To further the land grant mission of NCSU through direct public interaction and collaboration with local institutions and businesses, especially in venues frequented by patrons who may not normally choose to read or hear about science; and (2) To give NCSU scientists and scholars—whether tenure-track professors or graduate students—training in speaking to public audiences and communicating their research in new and innovative ways.

I hope you can join us next Tuesday, along with anyone else who might be interested in fungi and beer. If not, we plan to continue the event with scholars from NC State every 4th Tuesday of the month. Future topics this fall include the science of fear and the intricacies of apiculture. (We're also looking for good, engaging speakers for the spring semester, so feel free to pass on any suggestions you might think of.)

Best,
- Andy
