Announcement, Proposal Guidelines, and Procedures

The CHASS Research Office is pleased to announce the call and guidelines for the CHASS Scholarship and Research Awards (SRAs). These awards are intended to assist faculty in their scholarly pursuits. Applications are due electronically (in Word or PDF) to the CHASS Research Office (missy_seate@ncsu.edu) by 9:00 AM, Friday, October 26, 2012. The
SRA cover page and CV page must be included. Please email your application to missy_seate@ncsu.edu. Do not hesitate to contact Tom Birkland or Missy Seate (main office number 919-513-1937) if you have any questions about this award. Awards will be announced on November 19, 2012.

Type of Request

Individual CHASS faculty may apply for an SRA that provides support for expenses related to research, scholarship, and scholarship on teaching and learning. Allowable expenses include transportation, subsistence, materials and supplies, hourly graduate student support, copying, or other expenses related to collection of data or library source materials. Unsupported expenses include conference travel and additional pay or release time for faculty. Our budget allows for funding about six awards at about $5,000 each.

This award is directed at advancing research and scholarship with support for research expenses. A tangible scholarly product is expected from these awards, and we will require a report on these activities in mid-2013.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Tenured and tenure-track faculty are eligible to apply; their proposals need only be signed by their department head.
  • NTT faculty members may apply for these funds. To do so, they must supply a letter of support from their department heads, explaining how the project will benefit
    • the researcher, the department, and the college.
Review Criteria

Scholarship and Research Awards will be evaluated and ranked by the CHASS Research
Committee according to relative merit. Merit will be determined by assessing:

  • The significance of the project.
  • How well the project is conceived, defined, articulated, and organized.
  • The feasibility of the project.
  • The ability of the applicant(s) to complete the proposed project.
  • Results of the investigator’s prior research efforts supported by CHASS.
  • The likely outlets for publication of the work supported by the award.
  • The likelihood that the proposed project will create on-going research opportunities, including externally funded research projects. Proposals should, where appropriate in the applicant’s discipline, include a short description of potential funders beyond general references to, for example, “NEH” or “NSF.” Better proposals will target a specific funding program.

Award/Reporting Requirements
  • No award will be made unless the applicant has completed the CHASS faculty profile information. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:
  • A complete report on project activities is due in the CHASS Research Office by no later than August 1, 2013.
  • It is expected that the SRA will lead directly to a scholarly or research outcome (e.g., publication or grant proposal). Recipients are encouraged to present a summary of their project activity to an appropriate audience during the 2013-14 academic year. Examples of appropriate venues would include, but are not limited to, department or college seminars, public school outreach, or other community outreach. Award recipients are expected to keep the college informed of such outcomes and contributions.
