Funding Opportunities: NIH, NSF, and DOD

Here are some new funding opportunities from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Defense. As always, if you're interested in these opportunities contact the Research Office.

NIH: Emerging Infectious Diseases Research Centers
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has posted a new call for Emerging Infectious Disease Research Centers in regions around the globe where emerging and re-emerging infectious disease outbreaks are likely to occur. Multidisciplinary teams of investigators will conduct pathogen/host surveillance, study pathogen transmission, pathogenesis and immunologic responses in the host, and will develop reagents and diagnostic assays for improved detection for important emerging pathogens and their vectors. It is expected that the Centers will serve as a resource to a global network of NIAID investigators.  Application budgets are capped at $850,000 direct costs/year for 5 years. There is a companion RFA call for a Data Coordinating Center for the program (RFA-AI-19-029).

NSF: Planning Grants for Engineering Research Centers (ERC)
The ERC program is placing greater emphasis on research that leads to societal impact, including convergent approaches, engaging stakeholder communities, and strengthening team formation, in response to the NASEM study recommendations. he ERC program intends to support planning activities leading to convergent research team formation and capacity-building within the engineering community. This planning grant solicitation is designed to foster and facilitate the engineering community’s thinking about how to form convergent research collaborations. To participate in a forthcoming ERC competition, one is not required to submit a planning grant proposal nor to receive a planning grant.

DOD: Air Force Fiscal Year 2020 Young Investigator Research Program (YIP)
The Fiscal Year 2020 Air Force Young Investigator Research Program (YIP) intends to support young in career scientists and engineers showing exceptional ability and promise for conducting basic research. The program objective is to foster creative basic research in science and engineering; enhance early career development of outstanding young investigators; and increase opportunities for the young investigator to recognize the Air Force mission and related challenges in science and engineering.
