National Science Foundation Developmental Sciences Program

 Developmental Sciences  (DS)

DS supports research that addresses developmental processes within the domains of cognitive, social, emotional, and motor development across the lifespan by working with any appropriate populations for the topics of interest including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and non-human animals. The program also supports research investigating factors that affect developmental change including family, peers, school, community, culture, media, physical, genetic, and epigenetic influences. Additional priorities include research that: incorporates multidisciplinary, multi-method, microgenetic, and longitudinal approaches; develops new methods, models, and theories for studying development; includes participants from a range of ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and cultures; and integrates different processes (e.g., memory, emotion, perception, cognition), levels of analysis (e.g., behavioral, social, neural), and time scales.

Research Grants in the Arts support research studies that investigate the value and/or impact of the arts, either as individual components of the U.S. arts ecology or as they interact with each other and/or with other domains of American life. Applicants may propose research projects that focus on quantitative, qualitative, and/or mixed-method approaches using data gleaned from primary or secondary data. Sources may include but are not limited to, surveys, censuses, biological or medical experiments, observations, interviews, focus groups, social media activity, administrative data, and transactional/financial data. Other examples of data sources include archived materials such as written documents, audio/video recordings, or photographs and images.

Equity-Focused Policy Research: Building Cross-Cutting Evidence on Supports for Families with Young Children

The COVID-19 pandemic has made clear that current policies and practices fall short in supporting and facilitating families’ access to the social safety net system. Moreover, the pandemic has exacerbated the consequences of poverty, racism, and discrimination and exposed the health, economic, social, and other inequities vulnerable families experience. In the context of the pandemic, RWJF is taking steps to focus attention on and provide resources to families and communities facing the greatest strain.  The Equity-Focused Policy Research (EFPR) grant program seeks to fund a body of research that illuminates strategies and policies that enhance families’ equitable access to key resources for supporting their children’s healthy development. EFPR grants are guided by a research agenda that focuses on: (1) understanding the sources of inequities in families’ access to and use of key resources; (2) identifying and testing innovations to advance equity; and (3) strategies for scaling up policies and approaches that are effective in advancing equity. The agenda addresses three policy areas as providing critical resources for families: (1) access to early care and education (ECE); (2) income supports (such as the Earned Income Tax Credit [EITC] and cash transfer programs) and income generation/replacement; and (3) nutrition supports (such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [SNAP]).

 Rural Health and Safety Education (RHSE)

NIFA requests applications for the Rural Health and Safety Education (RHSE) Competitive Grant Program for Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 to address the needs of rural Americans by providing individual and family health education programs. The anticipated amount for awards in FY 2021 is approximately $4,000,000; approximately $1,000,000 of which will be for competitive external grants for eligible institutions to support the utilization of telehealth, telemedicine, and distance learning strategies for education and training in minority rural communities related to opioids or preventing spread of SARS-CoV-2 and in mitigating infection and transmission of SARS-CoV-2.

The National Institute of Aging is issuing this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) to highlight the continuing need for behavioral, psychological, social, and economic research on SARS-CoV-2 and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). There is a need for ongoing research on the longer-term effects of COVID-19 on the health and well-being of those infected, those caring for the sick, and many others whose lives were disrupted by the pandemic and its associated mitigation and prevention strategies. Beyond effects on individuals, this pandemic has brought about unprecedented social and economic disruption that is expected to have long-term and profound effects on the health of the population, particularly COVID-19 vulnerable groups including older adults. National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship Program (and Webinar about the program)

Advancing Health Literacy to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to COVID-19

The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) anticipates funding for an initiative to demonstrate the effectiveness of local “grassroots” efforts to improve the access, use and outcomes of vaccination, testing, contact tracing and health behaviors related to COVID-19 among racial and ethnic minority populations, including those in rural communities. OMH expects projects funded through this initiative to: 1) use evidence-based, culturally and linguistically appropriate health literacy strategies to increase health literacy for COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, vaccination and/or other mitigation measures (e.g., public health prevention practices); and 2) document participation in COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, vaccination and/or other mitigation measures (e.g., public health prevention practices). This program will align with, but not duplicate, existing federal efforts to disseminate resources for COVID-19 responses.  

National Endowment for the Arts: Creative Writing Fellowships

The National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowships program offers $25,000 grants in prose (fiction and creative nonfiction) and poetry to published creative writers that enable recipients to set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement. Applications are reviewed through an anonymous process in which the criteria for review are the artistic excellence and artistic merit of the submitted manuscript. Through this program, the Arts Endowment seeks to sustain and nurture a diverse range of creative writers at various stages of their careers and to continue to expand the portfolio of American art.

NC State Impact Scholars

 The Strengthening The Impact of Research (STIR) program seeks to enhance NC State’s capacity to design and conduct research with broad impacts on society by creating and supporting the first cohort of NC State Impact Scholars.

This group of 10-12 selected Impact Scholars will attend a series of five, 90-minute workshops in Spring 2021 to strengthen their capacity to create innovative research impacts on society and write more competitive grant proposals. Impact Scholars will also design and implement a project of their own, and conduct a Research Impacts workshop in their department. With support from the Office of Outreach and Engagement, Impact Scholars will receive $1,000 to support their project expenses.

Upcoming Deadline for NC Sea Grant Coastal Research (January 11, 2021)

The deadline is approaching for the first step in North Carolina Sea Grant’s 2022-2024 proposal process for applied research to address problems affecting coastal ecosystems, economies, and communities. 

North Carolina Sea Grant uses a two-step process for its core funding. Initially, researchers submit preproposals that outline the research topic, its need within the state, the approach and strategy, and the team to be assembled. The second step, known as full proposals, will take place later this year. A preproposal is required before a full proposal can be submitted for the final competitive review.

Russell Sage Foundation Program on Social, Political and Economic Inequality (short deadline!)

The Russell Sage Foundation will give high priority over the next several years to rigorous social science research that investigates the immediate and long-term social, political, economic, and psychological consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Center for Human Health and the Environment- Request for Pilot Project Applications

NC State University’s Center for Human Heath and the Environment (CHHE) is announcing its request for applications (RFA) for pilot project proposals for Fall 2020.  Applications are due on September 28, 2020.  The earliest start date is mid-Dec. 2020 and CHHE expects to fund 6-8 projects. 

Due October 8: National Humanities Center Residential Fellowships

Each year, the National Humanities Center welcomes up to forty scholars from across the humanities and all over the world. During their time in residence, Fellows are given the freedom to work on their projects while benefiting from the exceptional services of the Center. Applicants must have a doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials. Mid-career and senior scholars are encouraged to apply. Emerging scholars with a strong record of peer-reviewed work may also apply. In addition to scholars from all fields of the humanities, the Center accepts individuals from the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects.

The NSRP is a program designed to support scholarship/research needs in disciplines not driven by instrument-dependent and lab-based research. Such disciplines may include but are not limited to social sciences, humanities, education, design, management, and libraries. These fields require other types of resources or infrastructure such as database access, survey instruments and panels, measurement tools, and travel to field sites and archives. In an effort to strengthen infrastructure and the overall research and scholarship enterprise, priority will be given in the NSRP program to proposals that support multiple NC State scholars and/or multiple projects at the university.

North Carolina Humanities Council Community Engagement Grants

Community Engagement grants provide up to $3,500 to support the implementation of public humanities projects.  Formerly known as Grassroots Grants, typical expenses for this category include scholar stipends, scholar travel/meals/lodging, publicity, exhibit fabrication, and certain other expenses connected with the implementation of a public humanities engagement project of limited scope. Project formats can include, but are not limited to, lecture/discussion series, exhibitions, presentations and workshops. The Council encourages programs which serve educators, veterans, and underserved communities in North Carolina.

J.M. Kaplan Fund Furthermore Grants in Publishing

Furthermore grants assist nonfiction books having to do with art, architecture, and design; cultural history, the city, and related public issues; and conservation and preservation. The fund is looking for work that appeals to an informed general audience, gives evidence of high standards in editing, design, and production, and promises a reasonable shelf life. The grants, ranging roughly from $1,500 to a maximum of $15,000, are awarded twice annually with application deadlines of March 1 and September 1. Funds apply to such specific publication components as writing, research, editing, indexing, design, illustration, photography, and printing and binding.

Documentary Filmmakers: Independent Television Service (ITVS) Open Call

Independent Television Service (ITVS) Open Call

ITVS is looking for exceptional storytelling that’s in line with their mission: stories that take risks, tackle important issues, address the needs of underserved audiences, and are seldom seen in public media. ITVS will partner with applicants to complete production for a standalone broadcast length documentary to air on public television. The documentary can be on any subject, viewpoint or style as long as it is in active production already, as evidenced via a ten to fifteen minute work in progress sample.

Dynamics of Integrated Socio-Environmental Systems (DISES)

The DISES Program supports research projects that advance basic scientific understanding of integrated socio-environmental systems and the complex interactions (dynamics, processes, and feedbacks) within and among the environmental (biological, physical and chemical) and human ("socio") (economic, social, political, or behavioral) components of such a system.

NEH Humanities Connections Planning Grants

The Humanities Connections program seeks to expand the role of the humanities in undergraduate education at two- and four-year institutions. Awards will support innovative curricular approaches that foster productive partnerships among humanities faculty and their counterparts in the social and natural sciences and in pre-service or professional programs (such as business, engineering, health sciences, law, computer science, and other technology-driven fields), in order to encourage and develop new integrative learning opportunities for students.

Our Town

Our Town is the National Endowment for the Arts’ creative placemaking grants program. Through project-based funding, NEA supports projects that integrate arts, culture, and design activities into efforts that strengthen communities by advancing local economic, physical, and/or social outcomes. Successful Our Town projects ultimately lay the groundwork for systemic changes that sustain the integration of arts, culture, and design into local strategies for strengthening communities.

The University Global Partnership Network (UGPN) is pleased to announce the Research Collaboration Fund (RCF) call for proposals 2020.

The UGPN exists to create a foundation for international collaboration enabling academics and students from world-leading universities to work together on issues of global importance. Its members are North Carolina State University (NC State), the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), the University of Surrey (UOS) and the University of Wollongong (UOW).
