Call for Papers: 2017 Industry Studies Conference

Dear colleagues:

The 2017 Industry Studies Conference will be held in Washington DC on May 24-26.  Industry studies research is grounded in observations of firms and workplaces and in a deep understanding of the markets, institutions, and technologies that shape the competitive environment. It draws on a wide range of academic disciplines and fields, including political science, policy analysis, and other social sciences.  Next year’s theme is “Revisiting Capital.”

NC Sea Grant Opens Core Funding Cycle: Preproposals Due Jan. 17, 2017

North Carolina Sea Grant invites preproposals for coastal and marine research projects for the 2018–2020 core funding cycle. Completed preproposals — due by 5 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017 — are the required first step.

Of particular note for our college are Sea Grant's Strategic Focus Areas: Healthy Coastal Ecosystems; Resilient Communities and Economies; Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture; and Environmental Literacy and Workforce

Development. Please let the research office know if you are interested in this opportunity. 

Get Involved in the Humanities Extension Program!

The Humanities Extension Program at NC State University connects North Carolina public school classroom teachers with faculty from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences who are eager to share their expertise with students in grades K-12. The Humanities Extension Program creates new partnerships and builds on existing relationships between our faculty and public schools across the state. It fosters an understanding of and appreciation for the humanities and social sciences among students and exposes students across the state to potential areas of study at NC State. The faculty who participate in this program consistently enjoy the experience and request to be matched again in the future.

Learn how to marshall resources, conceptualize a good statement, make your main point stand out, and present ideas in a clear, concise, and persuasive manner.

RTI University Scholars Program

The RTI University Scholars Program provides support—one-half of each Scholar’s salary and fringe—for distinguished academic researchers to spend scholarly leave time at RTI International, actively collaborating with RTI experts. Applications are due 1/9/17. International Travel Assistance Fund

The Office of International Affairs has announced that it is time to submit applications for the International Travel Assistance Fund for 2017. As they note at their website, "International Affairs supports faculty and staff through an annual fund that provides $1,000 travel awards to encourage global engagement.

My office will match up to $1000 any college faculty member who applies for and receives this funding.

Laboratory for Analytic Sciences Winter Symposium December 5

The Laboratory for Analytic Sciences (ncsu-las.org) invites you to attend its upcoming Winter Symposium on December 5th at the McKimmon Center.  This symposium will run from 8:30 - 5:00and will include technical presentations and panel discussions in the morning and a poster session with NC State faculty, students, and industry partners in the afternoon.

Centennial Campus partner, Intuitive Surgical, http://www.intuitivesurgical.com/ will be hosting an open house on October 25th 11a - 4p. They are the creators of Da Vinci robotic arm used in minimally invasive surgery and we are pleased to welcome them to Centennial Campus!

Chancellor’s Innovation Fund Call for Preproposals

Dear Colleagues,

The Office of Technology Commercialization and New Ventures is now accepting pre-proposal submissions for the next funding cycle of the Chancellor’s Innovation Fund (CIF).  

CIF awards of up to $75,000 are designed to support short-term (one year or less) commercially-focused research projects. Proposed CIF projects ideally incorporate study endpoints designed to directly address license-enabling milestones required by potential licensees.  Anticipated outcomes include new licensing opportunities or the launch of a new university startup company.
