The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and its funding partners in the Grand Challenges family of grant programs are inviting innovators to apply for the following two grant opportunities.

Data Management Assistance from NC State Libraries

I received this note from NC State Libraries. The libraries have been very proactive in assisting with data management, which is now a major part of sponsored research.

More and more funding agencies require researchers to include data management plans with their grant proposals and share articles and data resulting from funded research.

In addition to the broad menu of research consultation, visualization support, and research workshops, the NCSU Libraries provides free guidance to NC State faculty, staff, post-docs, and students on creating and implementing data management plans and meeting public access compliance requirements.  Our consultation includes advice on data types and standards for describing data, options for short-term storage and long-term preservation, and considerations for sharing research outputs and public access compliance.

Data Science Initiative RED Talks

The Data Science Initiative (DSI) at NC State has announced its Fall RED Talks. These talks are likely to be of considerable interest to members of the Humanities and Social Science community.

Research and Innovation Seed Funding (RISF) Call for Proposals

Welcome to the 2016-17 Academic Year from the Research Office

Welcome back from what I hope was a productive and enjoyable summer! As you can tell from the increased traffic and students coming to campus, the new school year is upon us.

I have visited several departmental faculty meetings this term, and hope to visit some more before we get too deep in the semester. This blog post will summarize some of the things I've said so far--and will say if I've not yet met with your department.

Funding Opportunity: National Institutes of Health--Academic-Community Partnership Conference Series

NIH: Academic-Community Partnership Conference Series (R13)

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages Research Conference Grant (R13) applications to conduct health disparities-related meetings, workshops, and symposia. The purpose of this series to bring together academic institutions and community organizations to identify opportunities for reducing health disparities through the use of Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR). The objectives of meetings conducted as part of this award will be to: (1) establish and/or enhance existing academic-community partnerships; (2) identify community-driven research priorities; and (3) develop long-term collaborative CBPR research agendas. Thus, it is expected these partnerships will lead to grant applications for the support of CBPR projects designed to meet identified community needs.

Funding Opportunity: National Endowment for the Arts--Art Works

NEA: Research: Art Works
This year, Research: Art Works offers support for projects in two areas:
Track One: Value and Impact. These research projects aim to examine the value and/or impact of the arts in any topic area(s) by using data and methods appropriate to the proposed research questions. Track Two: Experimental and Quasi-Experimental Designs. These research projects aim to test the causal or inferred-causal impact of the arts on individual or cohort outcomes by using experimental or quasi-experimental design methods appropriate to the proposed research questions.This Track is only for projects relying primarily on experimental or quasi-experimental research methods.

NEH’s Humanities in the Public Square grant program

We received this notification from the National Humanities Alliance, of which we are a member.

Please join us for a conversation on NEH’s Humanities in the Public Square grant program with Jeff Hardwick, Assistant Director of the Division of Public Programs at NEH. The Humanities in the Public Square program funds projects that draw on humanities scholarship to deepen public understanding of today’s most challenging issues and pressing concerns. The first awards were announced in December 2015, and awardees included colleges, universities, associations, and state humanities councils. A new call for proposals will be issued in the coming months.

May Research Development and Grant Writing News

The Research Development Office maintains an institutional-level subscription allowing us to distribute freely within NC State University. Current and past issues can be accessed online with a valid unity ID. This is a very valuable resource to any scholar with an interest in external funding for research, and I high recommend it to all faculty.

Data Science Short Courses--College Funding Available

Dear Colleagues,

As part of the Data Science Initiative at NC State, the Data Science Short Course Series is a set of short, intensive courses on Data Science, including an introduction to the subject, machine learning, the R software package, text mining, and others. My office will fund up to about ten faculty [update: and some PhD students] to take these courses.
