We are pleased to announce the OPAL MANN GREEN ENGAGEMENT AND SCHOLARSHIP AWARD for the fifth year. This award recognizes and memorializes Dr. Opal Mann Green's distinguished leadership and dedication to the values of:

• Using democracy in the classroom, in the community, and at home,

• Creating inclusionary teams, and

• Community-based learning and mutually-beneficial action around local issues valued by community members. 

This annual recognition is awarded to two or more teams of individuals whose significant contributions and accomplishments have demonstrated excellence as engaged scholars who practice collaborative democratic strategies reflected in the Kellogg Commission Seven Part Test. The seven characteristics include responsiveness, respect for partners, academic neutrality, accessibility, integration, coordination, and resource partnerships. (See page 12 -

Chancellor's Innovation Fund: Call for Pre-Proposals

Dear Colleagues,

The Office of Technology Transfer is now accepting pre-proposal submissions for the next funding cycle of the Chancellor’s Innovation Fund.  Established by Chancellor Randy Woodson, this fund serves as a resource to assist NCSU innovators with reduction to practice or technology/product development needed to strengthen the commercial potential of intellectual property disclosed to OTT.

CIF awards of up to $75,000 are designed to support short-term (one year or less) commercially-focused research projects. Proposed CIF projects ideally incorporate study endpoints designed to directly address license-enabling milestones required by potential licensees.  Anticipated outcomes include new licensing opportunities or the launch of a new university startup company.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation: Grant Challenges Explorations in Several Disciplines and Topics

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is now inviting applications to Grand Challenges Explorations, which has awarded over 1070 grants in over 58 countries to date.

Grand Challenges Explorations seeks innovative global health and development solutions. Applicants can be at any experience level; in any discipline; and from any organization, including universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations as well as for-profit companies.

Two-page proposals are being accepted online from September 4, 2014 until November 12, 2014 on the following topics:

The Global Innovation Initiative seeks to support research with an emphasis on multidisciplinary science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)‐related issues of worldwide significance.

Excellent Opportunity for our Grad Students! National Science Foundation (NSF) East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) Fellowship Program

I received this from an official at the NSF today. While this looks like a STEM-heavy announcement, please note that "science" as defined in this announcement includes the social, behavioral, and economic sciences (SBE). So it's appropriate for our graduate students; please share broadly with potential applicants and your colleagues.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) Fellowship Program provides U.S. graduate students in science and engineering with an opportunity to spend 8 weeks (10 weeks for Japan) during the summer conducting research at one of the seven host locations in East Asia and Pacific: Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, and Taiwan. The program is a collaboration between NSF and counterpart agencies in each host location.

EAPSI is open to graduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and are enrolled in a research-oriented Masters or Ph.D. program in science or engineering. Applicants must propose a research project in a field of science, engineering or STEM education supported by NSF, including Engineering; Computer and Information Science and Engineering; Mathematical and Physical Sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, Materials Science); Biological Sciences; Geosciences; Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences; Education (STEM); and Multidisciplinary Research in these fields. Applicants identify and contact host researchers on their own, prior to submitting their EAPSI proposal; lists of prospective host institutions are available at the end of each Handbook.

NSF provides EAPSI Fellows with a $5,000 stipend and roundtrip airplane ticket to the host location. Our foreign counterparts provide in-country living expenses and accommodations (arrangements vary by host location). NCSU Libraries Data Management Support

Colleagues, I received this from the NCSU Libraries. This service the Libraries will provide will be very helpful to our researchers as these data management requirements become more pervasive across all funders. Please take advantage of the services the Libraries have to offer!

Many funding agencies have research data management and sharing policies requiring researchers to include data management plans with their grant proposals.  

The NCSU Libraries provides free guidance to NC State faculty, staff, post-docs, and students on creating and implementing data management plans.  Our consultation includes reviewing and providing advice on documenting data types and standards for data description, identifying options for short-term storage and long-term preservation, sharing and access considerations, policies for re-use and re-distribution, and defining responsibilities for carrying out the data management plan.

The Research and Innovation Seed Funding (RISF) Program is now accepting proposals from NC State faculty and staff professionals.

INTRODUCTION

Background
NC State’s Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development (ORIED), in partnership with the Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology and Science (KIETS), established the Strategic Research Initiatives Program (SRI) in 2010 to augment and replace the multi-disciplinary component of the Faculty Research and Professional Development (FRPD) program. The individual faculty component of the FRPD program remained unchanged.

The SRI program was renamed Research and Innovation Seed Funding (RISF) program later in the year to reflect the program’s goals.

Program Description
The overarching goal of the RISF program is to assist NC State researchers in developing innovative interdisciplinary programs that have strong potential for significant future support from government agencies, corporations, industrial consortia or foundations. Encouraged are projects that align with NC State’s strategic research areas of health and well-being, energy and environment, safety and security, and/or advanced materials and advanced manufacturing. Proposals should be of high risk/high gain and describe how the project will initiate new areas of research or enhance existing areas at NC State.

Proposals must emphasize and promote interdisciplinary research across multiple colleges and develop research initiatives with high potential for significant extramural funding. Be as specific as possible, including agency names, programs, dates and potential amounts.

Proposals that seek funds to enhance scholarship or faculty professional development are not eligible for this program. Please see Internal Funding Programs for opportunities that address these topics.

Beware of Low-Value Grantwriting Workshops

Colleagues, today I received yet another email from an outfit called "The Grant Training Center," advertising a Two-Day Grant Writing Workshop at University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

This organization charges $495 for this workshop, but you can receive much of the same information by working with the CHASS Research Office, with College and University development officers, with your colleagues at NC State, and with your professional network. This event is not sponsored by UNC-G, and this organization is simply renting space at or near UNC-G.

Please let me know if you have questions about this or similar organizations. Some of these offers are legit, but they tend to be the exception, not the rule.

Colleagues, I'm sharing a note I received from Bonnie Aldridge, who sends periodic reminders about our subscription to Research Development and Grant Writing News. This is a remarkable resource, full of information about funding trends, funding opportunities, how to prepare winning proposals, and so on. I strongly recommend Reading current and recent issues of this newsletter to gain insight into sometimes obscure funding opportunities. The e-books are also very good resources. Please share this with your colleagues across the college.

Brief Summary

NEH challenge grants are capacity-building grants, intended to help institutions and organizations secure long-term support for their humanities programs and resources. Through these awards, many organizations and institutions have been able to increase their humanities capacity and secure the permanent support of an endowment. Grants may be used to establish or enhance endowments or spend-down funds that generate expendable earnings to support and enhance ongoing program activities. Challenge grants may also provide capital directly supporting the procurement of long-lasting objects, such as acquisitions for archives and collections, the purchase of equipment, and the construction or renovation of facilities needed for humanities activities. Funds spent directly must be shown to bring long-term benefits to the institution and to the humanities more broadly. Grantee institutions may also expend up to 10 percent of total grant funds (federal funds plus matching funds) to defray costs of fundraising to meet the NEH challenge. Because of the matching requirement, these NEH grants also strengthen the humanities by encouraging nonfederal sources of support.

Investigator-Initiated Research: The Comprehensive School Safety Initiative

Colleagues, this is an interesting study for anyone researching schools and school safety, and, as noted, the solicitation is very wide open. If you're interested, I'd strongly urge you to apply and, of course, my office is ready to help with our application.

April 11, 2014 Dear Colleague: The purpose of this letter is to alert school officials and social and behavioral scientists and researchers about an exciting research opportunity. The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is interested in receiving proposals related to our “Investigator-Initiated Research: The Comprehensive School Safety Initiative” solicitation. The announcement has been on the streets for a few weeks now, but we would like to provide more insight into the kinds of proposals we are seeking. It is most important to note that the solicitation is wide open—NIJ will consider any research topic that can add to our knowledge base about school safety. Think broadly: What do we know and what do we need to know? This is your opportunity to test innovative ideas about school safety. Does your idea have the potential to make a difference where school safety is concerned? Can it be implemented in the real world? If successful, could it be adopted by schools across the country or schools in certain parts of the country (e.g., rural areas)?

Dear Colleague:

This letter is to alert all basic social and behavioral science research communities of the National Science Foundation's interest in receipt of proposals that will enable a better understanding of the contributing factors, causes, and consequences of violence perpetrated by and against youth. This will advance the Foundation's goal to provide scientific evidence in support of important social issues. The interest spans both disciplinary and interdisciplinary research.

Background: Although the incidence of youth violence is at a historic low, the continuing loss of life is tragic and the long term consequences of youth violence are of ongoing public concern. In 2013, the National Science Foundation sponsored a workshop on "Youth Violence: What We Need to Know." This two-day workshop brought together researchers from sociology, anthropology, psychology, communications, computer science, information systems, and public policy. The resulting reportsummarized much of the existing scientific evidence regarding the precursors and causes of violence perpetrated by children and adolescents. It underscored the need for additional study to enhance our understanding of the dynamics of, contributors to, and impact of violent ideology and violent acts.

NSF's mission includes support for basic research, in this case research with the goal of elucidating the causes, correlates, and consequences of youth violence. For this reason, projects focused on developing or evaluating specific interventions would lie outside NSF's purview.

UGPN Research Collaboration Fund Call for Proposals 2014

The Office of International Affairs at NC State on behalf of the University Global Partnership Network (UGPN), is pleased to announce the 3rd Round of the UGPN Research Collaboration Fund is now open. This Fund provides travel support for high-quality research collaboration between researchers at the UGPN partner institutions (North Carolina State University, University of São Paulo, University of Surrey). The intention is that these awards go beyond pump-priming to support substantive engagement that leads to high quality outputs, such as joint papers or joint research bids. Proposals should be jointly submitted by faculty from at least two of the UGPN partner institutions.

Information Session on Department of Defense Research Funding

Randy Avent sent me a reminder that there will be a panel discussion on how to find funding from the Defense Department. This panel will be held on Centennial Campus, College of Textiles, room 2431 at 9:00 am on Friday, March 21. Please share this information with your colleagues! This follows an earlier, and very well received, panel on seeking funding from the National Institutes of Health. 

New Release - U.S. Census Bureau International Population Data and Maps

The Census Bureau has added to and updated the online collection of subnational population data linked to maps (shapefiles) that are available at the Spatial Data Repository.  The Repository contains a variety of data and maps primarily for countries that receive assistance via the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
