Deadline Extended to December 13: Call for Proposals for the Equity Research Symposium

What does equity mean to you and to your research? The deans of the colleges of Humanities and Social Sciences, Education, Engineering, Agriculture and Life Sciences, Design, Natural Resources, Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Poole College of Management, Wilson College of Textiles, the Graduate School, and the Division of Academic and Student Affairs in collaboration with the university’s Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity, the Office of Research and Innovation and Research Leadership Academy are pleased to announce the inaugural Equity Research Symposium. 

The purpose of this symposium is to bring together researchers from across NC State’s campus to share and catalyze new cutting-edge, equity-focused and equity-relevant research. Students, faculty, postdocs and staff are eligible to make presentations on their research. A keynote address will be delivered by Raj Chetty, William A. Ackman Professor of Economics at Harvard University and Director of Opportunity Insights, whose work focuses on equity, race, and mobility in the United States. 

CDC Funding Opportunity on Post-COVID-19 Conditions in Diverse Populations

Tracking the burden, distribution, and impact of Post COVID-19 conditions in diverse populations for children, adolescents, and adults (Track PCC)

The purpose of this notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) is to track and investigate the burden and impact of post-COVID-19 conditions (PCC) in diverse populations within the United States through surveillance and long-term follow-up of cohorts with PCC in collaboration with state, academic, or health networks. Post-COVID conditions include a wide range of health consequences that occur more than four weeks after initial SARS-CoV-2 infection. Studies will also explore risk factors and mitigating factors as they relate to the development, resolution, and prevention of PCC. NOFO will include two components: Component A- up to four surveillance sites and Component B -one coordinating center site.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation- Health Policy Fellows Program

From a recent notice shared by the university: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation- Health Policy Fellows Program program provides the nation’s most comprehensive learning experience at the nexus of health, science, and policy in Washington, D.C. It is an outstanding opportunity for exceptional midcareer health professionals and behavioral/social scientists with an interest in health and health care policy. Fellows participate in the policy process at the federal level and use that leadership experience to improve health equity, health care, and health policy.

Digital Humanities Advancement Grants--National Endowment for the Humanities

The Digital Humanities Advancement Grants program (DHAG) supports innovative, experimental, and/or computationally challenging digital projects, leading to work that can scale to enhance scholarly research, teaching, and public programming in the humanities. The program also supports research that examines the history, criticism, ethics, and philosophy of digital culture or technology and its impact on society.

NSF supports infrastructure-focused research projects grounded in behavioral and social science

This headline, taken directly from a National Science Foundation announcement, speaks to NSF's efforts to support social and behavioral science research "examining the interactions of people and society with physical and digital infrastructure." They go on to say that "The cross-disciplinary projects are led by social and behavioral scientists collaborating with researchers from a wide range of fields including engineering, computer science, education, biology, mathematics, physical sciences and geosciences. ... For more information and a complete list of awards, see Strengthening American Infrastructure (SAI)." This news may inspire faculty in our college to collaborate with colleagues in other disciplines to develop proposals for the NSF.

What's New at NIH: Recorded Session

For the NC State Community, the recording and presentation slides for the PDU's session on "What's New at NIH" on September 16 are now online at the PDU's NIH Resources Page under NC State Presentations. (Unity ID required), This is a very useful presentation for anyone interested in NIH funding.

Early notice: NSF CAREER Workshop

The Proposal Development Unit (PDU) has announced that it will hold a workshop for prospective CAREER award nominees on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, from 1 to 4 pm. 

The NSF’s prestigious Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program offers support for early-career faculty seeking to build strong foundations for research and education in their respective fields. Faculty interested in submitting a CAREER proposal are invited to attend a workshop covering key aspects of proposal development. You will be able to register at the PDU homepage after the winter break.

This event is hosted by the PDU, as well as the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Sciences, and the Wilson College of Textiles. All eligible faculty are welcome to apply--and our college has had some recent success in this program, so we strongly urge anyone interested in applying to attend this workshop, and to reach out to the college research office for assistance.

Two September Seminars from the Proposal Development Unit

Here are two seminars in September that will be of interest to researchers in our college.The first is about new developments at the National Institutes of Health. The second is a more general discussion of how to find research funding using the tools available to you here at NC State. Please consider joining one or both of these seminars.

Center for Human Health and the Environment - Request for Pilot Project Applications

NC State/NIEHS Center for Human Health and the Environment (CHHE) is announcing its request for applications (RFA) for pilot project proposals for fall of 2021.  Applications are due on September 15, 2021 at 5:00 pm. EDT.

Individual awards will range upwards to $25,000 (direct cost) for one year and CHHE expects to fund up to five proposals. CHHE will also award up to two $50,000 proposals (direct costs) for dual-investigator, multi-disciplinary collaborative research which requires additional funding and separate budgets. CHHE full members can now use the STC Voucher Program Funds for STC services that are part of a CHHE PPP.

Two programs at NSF: Sociology, and Accountable Institutions and Behavior

Following are two important notices from the NSF regarding funding programs in Sociology and in Accountable Institutions and Behavior (political science, for the most part). As always, if you are interested in applying to either of these programs, and haven't already done so, please contact the research office. Even if you don't plan to submit for the August deadlines, the programs also have deadlines in January 22 that you may wish to target. 

Integrating Bioethics within Research Symposium July 20, 2021 from 1:00-4:00 PM ET.

 On July 20, 2021 from 1:00-4:00 PM ET, NIH will be convening a symposium entitled “A Match Made in Science: Integrating Bioethics and Biomedical Research” to highlight the integral role that bioethics plays in advancing science and to discuss strategies for fostering collaboration between bioethicists and biomedical researchers. Participants will discuss concrete examples of how integrating bioethics into biomedical research has strengthened research outcomes and share practical advice for initiating and sustaining successful collaborations. The webinar stream will be available here.

2022 NEH Summer Stipends: NOI Due July 16

Colleagues, due to an oversight on my part, the following announcement about the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Salary program for Summer 2022, which was distributed university-wide on May 25, was not flagged in the college research blog. The university will nominate two scholars, one of which may come from our college. 

If you are interested in this opportunity please reply as directed below by July 16 or sooner. The NOI form is very simple and will take just a few minutes for faculty to fill in.
