This program is designed to assist NC State researchers in developing innovative interdisciplinary programs that have strong potential for significant future support from government agencies, corporations, industrial consortia, or foundations. Proposals are due April 5, 2018

RFP: Faculty Research and Professional Development (DUE APRIL 2)

After a hiatus, the Faculty Research and Professional Development (FRPD) Program is back, and the University and College have issued the request for proposals (RFP).

W.T. Grant Foundation Scholar Awards

The William T. Grant Foundation has posted its solicitation for the 2018 Scholars Awards. See http://wtgrantfoundation.org/grants/william-t-grant-scholars-program

The online application opens on April 23. All applications must be received by July 5, 2018, at 5 pm.

The foundation allows our college to nominate one exceptionally qualified candidate for this award. With this in mind, while the foundation deadline is July 5, the college's internal deadline for this program will be May 1. This will provide the successful applicant with plenty of time to work with our office to prepare a competitive proposal.

These programs are those that limit the number of applications that the university can submit. Russell Sage Foundation: Small Awards Competition for Emerging Schollars

Improving Education and Reducing Inequality in the United States

The Russell Sage Foundation (RSF) and the William T. Grant Foundation (W.T. Grant) request proposals for research projects that investigate educational opportunity and success in the U.S. by utilizing data on academic achievement from the Stanford Education Data Archive (SEDA). The archive, constructed by Sean Reardon (Stanford University) and colleagues, contains data on the results of over 300 million standardized achievement tests taken by about 40 million public school students from 2009 to 2015. This new data was made public on December 5, 2017. The New York Times mapped these test scores in two interactive charts that demonstrate the effectiveness of school districts nationwide.

Data management support from the NCSU Libraries

From NCSU Libraries: Funding agencies often require researchers to include data management plans (DMP) with their grant proposals and share articles and data resulting from funded research.

In addition to research consultation, visualization support, and research workshops, the NCSU Libraries provides free guidance to NC State faculty, staff, post-docs, and students on creating and implementing data management plans and meeting public access compliance requirements.  Our consultation includes advice on data types and standards for describing data, options for short-term storage and long-term preservation, and considerations for sharing research outputs and public access compliance.  For research projects that are already underway, our post-award checklist can help you follow your DMP and to keep your data safe and available for sharing and reuse.

Outreach and Engagement Grants Available

Faculty members committed to addressing significant community challenges in three strategic regions of the state are invited to submit proposals to the Outreach and Engagement Incentive Grants Program. The deadline is Jan. 16.

Grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to seven projects running from the spring of 2018 to the end of June 2019. The three strategic areas covered by the program are Wake County/City of Raleigh, Lenoir County/City of Kinston and Rutherford/Polk counties.

CHHE Pilot Project - Request for Applications (RFA)

The NC State University Center for Human Heath and the Environment (CHHE) is announcing its request for applications (RFA) for pilot project proposals for Spring 2018.  Applications will be due on January 15, 2018.  The earliest start date will be April 1, 2018 with 12 months to expend awarded dollars.

International Travel Assistance Fund--Call for Applications (and potential for support from the College)

The Office of Global Engagement (OGE) has announced that it is time to submit applications for the International Travel Assistance Fund for 2017. As they note on their website, "International Affairs supports faculty and staff through an annual fund that provides $1,000 travel awards to encourage global engagement."

My office will match up to $1000 any college faculty member who applies for and receives this funding, provided that the project for which they are funded advances research and scholarship.

NC State is a founding member of North Carolina Campus Compact, a collaborative network of 37 NC colleges and universities with a shared commitment to educating engaged citizens and strengthening communities. Guided by an Executive Board of presidents and chancellors, the Compact provides information, resources, recognition, and professional development opportunities to help faculty, staff, and students build the “engaged campus,” where student learning is connected to community life. Founded in 2002 and hosted by Elon University, the Compact is one of 34 state and regional affiliates of the national Campus Compact network. College Process for Reviewing Applications to the Non-laboratory Scholarship/Research Support Program (NSRP).

This year the University is inaugurating the new Non-laboratory Scholarship/Research Support Program (NSRP). The University website for this program is at https://research.ncsu.edu/rdo/funding/internal-funding/nsrp/

Our office seeks to ensure that applications to the program are in proper form and that budgets are complete and compliant with University and college rules. We also would like to see proposals before they are submitted so as to avoid potential duplication of effort across projects. Because I, along with other associate deans, will be rank ordering these proposals, it would be very valuable to see these at the college level well before they are submitted.

With this in mind, we are very strongly recommending that all NSRP proposals be submitted first to the Research Office no later than August 31. You may mail them directly to me at tabirkla@ncsu.edu with a copy to Joyce Christian, at jjjones3@ncsu.edu.

The Research Development Office has been made aware of interest in a limited submission opportunity with a short timeline. Any faculty interested in participating in an internal competition for this opportunity should complete the Notification of Interest form by 4:00 on Thursday 7/27.

OSHA: Susan Harwood Training Grant Program

The Susan Harwood Training Grant Program funds eligible nonprofit organizations to deliver

training and/or develop training and educational materials on the recognition, abatement, and

prevention of occupational safety and health hazards in their workplaces.
