These grants support projects that integrate arts, culture, and design activities into efforts that strengthen communities by advancing local economic, physical, and/or social outcomes. Successful Our Town projects ultimately lay the groundwork for systems changes that sustain the integration of arts, culture, and design into local strategies for strengthening communities. These projects require a partnership between a nonprofit organization and a local government entity, with one of the partners being a cultural organization. Cost share/matching grants range from $25,000 to $150,000, with a minimum cost share/match equal to the grant amount.

Non-laboratory Scholarship/Research Support Program (NSRP) Call for Proposals: Due September 30, 2021

The 2021 cycle of the Non-laboratory Scholarship/Research Support Program (NSRP) is now open. NSRP is designed to support scholarship/research needs in disciplines not driven by instrument-dependent and lab-based research. Such disciplines may include, but are not limited to, social sciences, humanities, education, design, management, and libraries. These fields require other types of resources or infrastructure such as database access, survey instruments and panels, measurement tools, and travel to field sites and archives. In an effort to strengthen infrastructure and the overall research and scholarship enterprise, priority will be given to proposals that support multiple NC State scholars and/or multiple projects at the university.

National Endowment for the Humanities: Media Projects

The Media Projects program supports the development, production, and distribution of radio programs, podcasts, long-form documentary films, and documentary film series that engage general audiences with humanities ideas in creative and appealing ways. Projects must be grounded in humanities scholarship and demonstrate an approach that is thoughtful, balanced, and analytical. Media Projects offers two levels of funding: Development and Production. Dear Colleague Letter: A Broader Impacts Framework for Proposals Submitted to NSF's Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Directorate

The National Science Foundation's Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE) directorate has issued a Dear Colleague Letter describing a new framework for the explanation of broader impacts in proposals submitted to SBE programs. As the DCL notes, "This "broader impacts framework" in no way alters NSF's existing criteria ‒ rather, it offers guidance on how to consider and convey broader impacts in ways that are easier for others to understand." If you are planning to write a proposal for NSF, you will want to review this letter carefully. Other directorates have not adopted this framework, but have acknowledged that it may provide proposal writers with a good way of framing their broader impacts narratives in other proposals. Please review the letter carefully, and let the Research Office know if you have any questions.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation: Equity-Focused Policy Research: Building Cross-Cutting Evidence on Supports for Families with Young Children

Equity-Focused Policy Research: Building Cross-Cutting Evidence on Supports for Families with Young Children

The COVID-19 pandemic has made clear that current policies and practices fall short in supporting and facilitating families’ access to the social safety net system. Moreover, the pandemic has exacerbated the consequences of poverty, racism, and discrimination and exposed the health, economic, social, and other inequities vulnerable families experience. In the context of the pandemic, RWJF is taking steps to focus attention on and provide resources to families and communities facing the greatest strain.  The Equity-Focused Policy Research (EFPR) grant program seeks to fund a body of research that illuminates strategies and policies that enhance families’ equitable access to key resources for supporting their children’s healthy development. EFPR grants are guided by a research agenda that focuses on: (1) understanding the sources of inequities in families’ access to and use of key resources; (2) identifying and testing innovations to advance equity; and (3) strategies for scaling up policies and approaches that are effective in advancing equity. The agenda addresses three policy areas as providing critical resources for families: (1) access to early care and education (ECE); (2) income supports (such as the Earned Income Tax Credit [EITC] and cash transfer programs) and income generation/replacement; and (3) nutrition supports (such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [SNAP]).

Key dates:
  • Brief proposals:  2/16/2021
  • Full proposals:  5/11/2021

The National Institute of Aging is issuing this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) to highlight the continuing need for behavioral, psychological, social, and economic research on SARS-CoV-2 and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). There is a need for ongoing research on the longer-term effects of COVID-19 on the health and well-being of those infected, those caring for the sick, and many others whose lives were disrupted by the pandemic and its associated mitigation and prevention strategies. Beyond effects on individuals, this pandemic has brought about unprecedented social and economic disruption that is expected to have long-term and profound effects on the health of the population, particularly COVID-19 vulnerable groups including older adults. Interested PIs can apply through the Parent R01, R21, and R03 opportunities, as well as several NIA-specific funding opportunity announcements.

Advancing Health Literacy to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to COVID-19

The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) anticipates funding for an initiative to demonstrate the effectiveness of local “grassroots” efforts to improve the access, use and outcomes of vaccination, testing, contact tracing and health behaviors related to COVID-19 among racial and ethnic minority populations, including those in rural communities. OMH expects projects funded through this initiative to: 1) use evidence-based, culturally and linguistically appropriate health literacy strategies to increase health literacy for COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, vaccination and/or other mitigation measures (e.g., public health prevention practices); and 2) document participation in COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, vaccination and/or other mitigation measures (e.g., public health prevention practices). This program will align with, but not duplicate, existing federal efforts to disseminate resources for COVID-19 responses.
