Announcement of Australian Bridging Grants

The Australian Government has announced this week grant funding to help Australian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and researchers work with international partners to develop innovative products and services. The Bridging Grants (BG) of the Global Connections Fund (GCF) opened eligibility testing on the 2^nd May and will close on the 16^thMay 2017. Once BG application has been approved a full BG application must be prepared and received by the 23^rd May 2017. Applicants will be notified of the final outcomes by the end of July 2017.

 

NSF MRI Internal Competition Dates

Last year, the Office of Research, Innovation, & Economic Development developed a revised internal process for handing submissions to the NSF Major Research Instrumentation program. That process has been updated slightly for the current year (January 2018 submission deadline). Full details and deadlines can be found here.

Data Science Initiative: Data Matters 2017

The Data Science Initiative is excited to announce registration is open for Data Matters 2017! Head over to http://datamatters.org/ for all course descriptions, instructor bios, registration, and logistic information.

Building on the success of last year's Data Matters event, NC State has again partnered with UNC Chapel Hill's the Odum Institute and Renci, and the National Consortium for Data Science to offer “Data Matters: Data Science Short Course Series” in Hunt Library from August 7-11, 2017.  Data Matters is a week-long series of one and two-day courses aimed at professionals in business, research, and government. If you are struggling to stay afloat in the data deluge, grappling with large, complex data, or simply want to sharpen your data science skills, Data Matters is for you! 

Reminder: Internal Preproposals Deadline April 12

As a reminder,  Internal pre-proposals for UNC Research Opportunities Initiative (ROI) and Inter-Institutional Planning Grant (IPG) programs must be submitted to ORIED via InfoReady Review by 5:00 pm on Wednesday 4/12/17. Please follow the pre-proposal guidelines laid out in the RFPs. As in previous years, the Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Economic Development will prioritize pre-proposals from NC State following an internal competition that will be managed by ORIED. Contact Jon Horowitz with any questions.

• DHS S&T Center of Excellence for Cross-Border Threat Screening and Supply Chain Defense – Lead (link) – Due August 4, 2017 – Up to $3,500,000 (subject to availability of funds) per year for 10 years

Faculty Development Opportunity: NIH Grant Writing Workshop

ORIED’s Research Development Office and the Proposal Development Unit are pleased to announce a new NIH-focused workshop that will provide insider insights into the perceptions and thinking of NIH study section grant reviewers.  The workshop will be held on May 30 and 31, 2017, in Textiles Room 2431 on NC State’s Centennial Campus.  This event is free but registration is required.

NSF Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Internal Competition Dates

The University has announced its process for the NSF's Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) program (see below). Our college typically does not have a large number of labs with needs for major research equipment or instruments--but we do have some, and this is an opportunity to compete for funds to acquire needed instrumentation. Finding Grants for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Research (Monday, March 13, 3:00-4:15 P.M., 405 Clark Hall): Are you looking for funding opportunities that support doing research in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)? Two NIH Regional Seminars on Program Funding and Grants Administration in 2017

The NIH Office of Extramural Research is offering two NIH Regional Seminars on Program Funding and Grants Administration in 2017. 

These 2-day seminars, with optional workshop days, are taking place in New Orleans, LA (May 3-5) and Baltimore, MD (October 25-27). The program is geared towards new investigators and extramural research administrators wanting to learn more about the NIH grants application and award processes. These seminars offer a unique opportunity for attendees to interact with over 60 NIH & HHS program, review, grants and policy officials in a central location, who are eager to share their expertise and answer your questions. There are over 45 different topics to choose from over the course of the 2-day seminar, plus more in-depth opportunities during our optional pre-seminar workshop day on topics such as electronic Research Administration, Human Subjects Research Protections, Intellectual Property, and even an Administrator’s Boot Camp.

Funding Opportunity from NSF: Systems Science (SYS)

NSF: Systems Science (SYS)

This program supports fundamental research leading to a theoretical foundation for design and systems engineering.   In particular, the Systems Science program seeks intellectual advances in which underlying theories (such as probability theory, decision theory, game theory, organizational sociology, behavioral economics or cognitive psychology) are integrated and abstracted to develop explanatory models for design and systems engineering in a general, domain-independent fashion.  Ideally, the explanatory models, derived from the underlying theoretical foundations will lead to testable hypotheses.  Based on collected evidence supporting or falsifying the hypotheses, new insights are gained allowing the explanatory models to be refined or updated.

This program supports fundamental research leading to new engineering and systems design methods and practices for specific global contexts.  In particular, ESD seeks intellectual advances in which the theoretical foundations underlying design and systems engineering are operationalized into rigorous and pragmatic methods for a specific context. 

NSF CAREER proposal workshop

NSF’s prestigious Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program offers support for early-career faculty seeking to build strong foundations for research and education in their respective fields. Those interested in submitting a CAREER proposal are invited to attend a three-session workshop covering key aspects of proposal development. Workshop sessions will be held at the Talley Student Union from 3 to 4:30 PM on March 8, 22 and 29. The three sessions include:

Session 1: Specific requirements, Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts, and communicating with NSF Program Directors

Session 2: Strategies for writing strong Project Summaries and Project Narratives, as well as Research and Education plans

Session 3: NSF CAREER panel review process, peer reviews, and small group discussions led by previous CAREER awardees (organized by NSF Directorate)

Participants are encouraged to attend all three workshops as the information presented each day will build on previous sessions.

The CAREER workshop is open to all NC State faculty and will be coordinated by the Proposal Development Unit (Office of Research, Innovation and Economic Development), College of Sciences, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and College of Textiles.

Duke-NC State Translational Research Grant

Applications due by March 9, 2017

The Duke Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) is partnering with The Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development (ORIED), as well as NC State’s Comparative Medicine Institute (CMI), to support new inter-institutional collaborative research teams.

This Duke/NC State Translational Research Grant offers $50,000 (half from each institution) for 12 months to fund novel clinical and translational research that applies or accelerates discovery into testing in clinical or population settings.

Nagoya University-NC State Research Collaboration Seed Grants

International Affairs offers funding for NC State faculty to enhance research collaboration and academic exchange with colleagues at Nagoya University in Japan. NC State and Nagoya University are now accepting proposals for the development of research collaboration. Funds will support international travel and related activities leading to high-quality research collaboration. The intention is that these collaborations will result in high quality outputs, such as workshops/seminars, research collaboration, exchanges of researchers and graduate students, publication of joint papers from collaborative research, or follow-on joint research bids. More information here

Call for Proposals: 2017 Engagement Scholarship Consortium

The call for proposals for the 2017 Engagement Scholarship Consortium is now open. Proposals are sought for presentations and posters that will inform or advance the scholarship and practice of engaged scholarship and university-community partnerships through research findings, innovative program design and partnership models, proven community/institutional impacts, effective curriculum or service-learning models, collaborative policy development and integration, or successful civic engagement practices.

NC Sea Grant Opens Core Funding Cycle: Preproposals Due Jan. 17, 2017

North Carolina Sea Grant invites preproposals for coastal and marine research projects for the 2018–2020 core funding cycle. Completed preproposals — due by 5 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017 — are the required first step.

Of particular note for our college are Sea Grant's Strategic Focus Areas: Healthy Coastal Ecosystems; Resilient Communities and Economies; Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture; and Environmental Literacy and Workforce

Get Involved in the Humanities Extension Program!

The Humanities Extension Program at NC State University connects North Carolina public school classroom teachers with faculty from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences who are eager to share their expertise with students in grades K-12. The Humanities Extension Program creates new partnerships and builds on existing relationships between our faculty and public schools across the state. It fosters an understanding of and appreciation for the humanities and social sciences among students and exposes students across the state to potential areas of study at NC State. The faculty who participate in this program consistently enjoy the experience and request to be matched again in the future.
