International Travel Assistance Fund--Call for Applications (and potential for support from the College)

The Office of Global Engagement (OGE) has announced that it is time to submit applications for the International Travel Assistance Fund for 2017. As they note on their website, "International Affairs supports faculty and staff through an annual fund that provides $1,000 travel awards to encourage global engagement."

My office will match up to $1000 any college faculty member who applies for and receives this funding, provided that the project for which they are funded advances research and scholarship.

National Academy of Sciences call for research ideas in the social and behavioral sciences

NC State is a founding member of North Carolina Campus Compact, a collaborative network of 37 NC colleges and universities with a shared commitment to educating engaged citizens and strengthening communities. Guided by an Executive Board of presidents and chancellors, the Compact provides information, resources, recognition, and professional development opportunities to help faculty, staff, and students build the “engaged campus,” where student learning is connected to community life. Founded in 2002 and hosted by Elon University, the Compact is one of 34 state and regional affiliates of the national Campus Compact network. North Carolina Campus Compact builds the capacity of colleges and universities to produce civically-engaged graduates and strengthen communities.

College Process for Reviewing Applications to the Non-laboratory Scholarship/Research Support Program (NSRP).

This year the University is inaugurating the new Non-laboratory Scholarship/Research Support Program (NSRP). The University website for this program is at https://research.ncsu.edu/rdo/funding/internal-funding/nsrp/

Our office seeks to ensure that applications to the program are in proper form and that budgets are complete and compliant with University and college rules. We also would like to see proposals before they are submitted so as to avoid potential duplication of effort across projects. Because I, along with other associate deans, will be rank ordering these proposals, it would be very valuable to see these at the college level well before they are submitted.

With this in mind, we are very strongly recommending that all NSRP proposals be submitted first to the Research Office no later than August 31. You may mail them directly to me at tabirkla@ncsu.edu with a copy to Joyce Christian, at jjjones3@ncsu.edu.

The Susan Harwood Training Grant Program funds eligible nonprofit organizations to deliver

training and/or develop training and educational materials on the recognition, abatement, and

prevention of occupational safety and health hazards in their workplaces.

New Funding Opportunities 7/14/17

After the jump is a list of new funding opportunities from the Research Development Office. From now on, I will not edit this list to single out opportunities that seem best suited to our faculty. While some of these opportunities are clearly outside the realm of most of our expertise, that decision is best left to faculty members to decide, particularly since these are often interdisciplinary programs. Statistical Consulting Available to NC State Researchers

The Statistical Consulting Seminar (ST 841) provides statistical advice and help to NC State researchers from the planning, stage, through selecting the experimental or sampling design, to running statistical analyses and interpreting statistical results. Students in the class are interested in gaining hands-on experience in statistical consulting and very eager to collaborate with NC State researchers. We are looking for research projects that challenge students and help them to gain experience with analyzing real data.

RFA: Accelerating Advances in Animal Welfare DUE FRIDAY July 7

Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research: Accelerating Advances in Animal Welfare

The objective of this RFA is to stimulate and support innovative research in farm-animal welfare. Research is critical to progress in this field, as changes to animal production practices may impact animal physiology, may require large-scale alterations in animal housing and may have environmental and economic impacts that extend beyond the farm or production facility. FFAR expects the Animal Welfare program to support cross-disciplinary research in animal genetics, behavior, husbandry, physiology, biotechnology, nutrition and other scientific areas.

UPDATED LOCATION Upcoming LAS Social Science Lecture June 28

As you will see in the flyer that follows this note, the lecture is set for Wednesday, June 28, from 1 to 3 pm, in NEW LOCATION: Engineering II Room 2012  on Centennial Campus. This is also going to be streamed via WebEx.

Coming up at the National Humanities Center (in the Research Triangle Park) on June 10-11: DataRescue RTP. In brief: "DataRescue RTP aims to preserve online government data related to housing and education programs. Announcement of Australian Bridging Grants

The Australian Government has announced this week grant funding to help Australian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and researchers work with international partners to develop innovative products and services. The Bridging Grants (BG) of the Global Connections Fund (GCF) opened eligibility testing on the 2^nd May and will close on the 16^thMay 2017. Once BG application has been approved a full BG application must be prepared and received by the 23^rd May 2017. Applicants will be notified of the final outcomes by the end of July 2017.

 

NSF MRI Internal Competition Dates

Last year, the Office of Research, Innovation, & Economic Development developed a revised internal process for handing submissions to the NSF Major Research Instrumentation program. That process has been updated slightly for the current year (January 2018 submission deadline). Full details and deadlines can be found here.

Data Science Initiative: Data Matters 2017

The Data Science Initiative is excited to announce registration is open for Data Matters 2017! Head over to http://datamatters.org/ for all course descriptions, instructor bios, registration, and logistic information.

Building on the success of last year's Data Matters event, NC State has again partnered with UNC Chapel Hill's the Odum Institute and Renci, and the National Consortium for Data Science to offer “Data Matters: Data Science Short Course Series” in Hunt Library from August 7-11, 2017.  Data Matters is a week-long series of one and two-day courses aimed at professionals in business, research, and government. If you are struggling to stay afloat in the data deluge, grappling with large, complex data, or simply want to sharpen your data science skills, Data Matters is for you! 

Reminder: Internal Preproposals Deadline April 12

As a reminder,  Internal pre-proposals for UNC Research Opportunities Initiative (ROI) and Inter-Institutional Planning Grant (IPG) programs must be submitted to ORIED via InfoReady Review by 5:00 pm on Wednesday 4/12/17. Please follow the pre-proposal guidelines laid out in the RFPs. As in previous years, the Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Economic Development will prioritize pre-proposals from NC State following an internal competition that will be managed by ORIED. Contact Jon Horowitz with any questions.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has published a funding opportunity that might be of interest:

• DHS S&T Center of Excellence for Cross-Border Threat Screening and Supply Chain Defense – Lead (link) – Due August 4, 2017 – Up to $3,500,000 (subject to availability of funds) per year for 10 years
• DHS S&T Center of Excellence for Cross-Border Threat Screening and Supply Chain Defense – Partner (link) – Due August 4, 2017 – Up to $500,000; total will be distributed over the two-year period of performance (Subject to availability of funds and project execution)

Faculty Development Opportunity: NIH Grant Writing Workshop

ORIED’s Research Development Office and the Proposal Development Unit are pleased to announce a new NIH-focused workshop that will provide insider insights into the perceptions and thinking of NIH study section grant reviewers.  The workshop will be held on May 30 and 31, 2017, in Textiles Room 2431 on NC State’s Centennial Campus.  This event is free but registration is required.

NSF Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Internal Competition Dates

The University has announced its process for the NSF's Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) program (see below). Our college typically does not have a large number of labs with needs for major research equipment or instruments--but we do have some, and this is an opportunity to compete for funds to acquire needed instrumentation.
